Magical Cottage Thrifting Weekend

IMG_4237

I've been on the lookout for a coffee perculator forever.  It had to check some boxes though – predominantly white, a good price, preferably vintage CorningWare (did you know this stuff was first produced for America's Space Program, so love that) and most importantly a good bubbly sound.  A fly-by visit to Salvos today and I found it.  I clutched it longingly, it was clean, hardly used, white, couldn't tell about the bubbliness.

There was one sticking point, I was in the store with the Woman With The Hat and the price labels that are way out there and say things like 'an oldie'.

I made my morning coffee in it this morning, I was so excited, it bubbled deliciously, I felt all housewife-ish and was humming a little tune as I poured.  I spent all day thinking about Corning Ware, and space travel, the nostaligic feel of the pot bubbling on the stovetop rather than plugging it in.  And I googled and Ebayed Corning Ware.  Alot.  I now know quite a bit about Corning Ware and I think I'll be looking out for it in my thrifting adventures…that's why I love love love treasure hunting for vintage goods, the huge thrill of the chase and a score like this makes over-the-moon happy.

one dollar finial

Another busy weekend bites the dust and I've had one of the Beach Cottage kiddos sick hence not much stuff going on with the blog.  We had a barbecue yesterday, yep the weather Down Under is hotting up so while y'all are thinking of rugging up we are peeling off..bring it on. I enjoyed the foofying of the table and I played around with some invites, menus and placecards on the computer – I'll blog it all tomorrow, I'm still looking after a sick little kiddo today.

I scored a great find a pair of gorgeous finials for a dollar.  I have a bit of a thing for finials but finding ones that tick the boxes of my budget and my taste is often a trifle tricky.  So I snatched these up (loving the little bit of aged rust), knowing exactly where they were going…I'm really pleased with how they've turned out, funny how little things can pull together a room.

imitation the best form of flattery?

IMG_4127

I don't always agree that imitation is the best form of flattery, blatant copying can somtimes be particularly irksome, especially if it involves one person's hard work (I've been on the end of it, so I know…).

For the roses in the jug, I shamelessly copied the gorgeous Nel at Driftwood & Roses and her string and bottle vase idea I loved the rustic look of the string and the glass, I'm sure she won't mind (do you Nel?)…and take a look at her find today, oooh it's just gorgeous!

I went vintage-hunting today and called the man in the shop "sweetie", he looked at me in a funny way, he's seen my hyper-ventilating about screens, jumping up and down about old curtains and today I am all jubilant to finally find a bunch of fake white roses (see before pic below) and a pile of home magazines for and all excitedly ask him how much for the crocheted bedspread, another strange look passed his face… squealed yep.  And he nearly pushed me out the door, all the while I was trying to make friendly conversation…and the worst thing is that I'm weird, me, MsBeachCottage!!

basket makeover

IMG_4107

Today I tried a new way of whitewashing, I used a sponge paintbrush, rather than my previous method, next time I will try just a paintbrush and very watery paint.  Using a sponge brush did not get right in the weave bit of the basket, the photos show this up more than it actually is in real life.  Inside the basket is a little tray, I am going to use that for my jewellery collection which is growing too fast.  It took like two minutes for the paint to dry in today's weather and as I stood there looking at the result, I felt it needed more, you know, beachyness.  So I used the mistreatment philosophy (you know what that is, right?) and added the stripe fabric with upholstery tacks.

Love it.

The Miss BeachCottage Bedroom Mission

IMG_4095_1

I've been working on Miss BeachCottage's bedroom, boy she is a hoarder, she is attached to everything, in particular clothes.  So attached that I feel mean chucking stuff out while she is at school, which is my strategy with the boys.  I bought her some new bedlinen ages ago, but her room was such a pit that I didn't have the heart to put it on the bed.  Last Sunday, a rainy day and I had been sitting blog surfing for too long, I suddenly had the urge to start the bedroom mission.  Phew it was bad.  Stacks of stuff everywhere, sports gear all over the floor, papers strewn around…you get the picture.  We worked on it together and she's kept it tidy and clean for a week, I think she is so much happier now, it was just too big a job for her to tackle on her own.  I've been going in there and just taking like 2 secs to tidy a few odd bits, just to keep on top of it, Flylady would love me.  I still need to do some serious re-arranging and finishing touches, but I thought you might like to see the bedlinen and even though she is a very sporty girl and not too girly in what she wears, the room is pink, not too OTT, but enough to satisfy her inner-Princess
