Magical Cottage Thrifting Weekend

IMG_4237

I've been on the lookout for a coffee perculator forever.  It had to check some boxes though – predominantly white, a good price, preferably vintage CorningWare (did you know this stuff was first produced for America's Space Program, so love that) and most importantly a good bubbly sound.  A fly-by visit to Salvos today and I found it.  I clutched it longingly, it was clean, hardly used, white, couldn't tell about the bubbliness.

There was one sticking point, I was in the store with the Woman With The Hat and the price labels that are way out there and say things like 'an oldie'.

I made my morning coffee in it this morning, I was so excited, it bubbled deliciously, I felt all housewife-ish and was humming a little tune as I poured.  I spent all day thinking about Corning Ware, and space travel, the nostaligic feel of the pot bubbling on the stovetop rather than plugging it in.  And I googled and Ebayed Corning Ware.  Alot.  I now know quite a bit about Corning Ware and I think I'll be looking out for it in my thrifting adventures…that's why I love love love treasure hunting for vintage goods, the huge thrill of the chase and a score like this makes over-the-moon happy.

  1. I’m going to have to try that with my hubbie! :)

I recognize that little blue flower pattern – I think my Grandmom has some cookingware with that same pattern.

Can’t wait to see the oars!!

What a beautiful example of Corningware in its perfect location, a beach cottage home.

What are you planning on doing with the oars? Saw some in a decor shop this weeeknd for way too much money and not very nicely displayed, as much as I thought perfect for a beach/lake cottage, was not sure how to best show them off. Looking forward to your ideas for oars.

I am absolutely GREEN with envy! Wooden Oars & a percolator are at the very top of MY wish list. The percolator will be a much easier find for me (once I get out there and diligently look) but the oars will not be so easy here in Chicago. But, I’m determined. LOVE the corning ware pot you chose. I have some of my own pieces that I love – I’ll bet the coffee was just amazing this morning. Now, I’ll just wait patiently to see your oars.

My mom has that corning pot… hmm i may have to steal it. :)

I’m a certified corning junkie. I have tons of it. A long time ago, someone told me to never ever cook or store food in plastic and I took them seriously.. best excuse ever to buy LOTS of corning!

  6. Oh, you got your oars!! I’m so happy. And I’m loving to hear the little gem about men scoring better prices…GOOD one that I’ll have to try (that assuming I can get him to thrift with me). And that Corning pot is in FABULOUS condition…you lucky gal! :-)

  7. Hi Sarah,
I have to agree…the thrill of the hunt does something for me too!

You got a great deal on the coffee pot…I doubt very seriously my husband would go with me, but he loves to see what all I buy!

That’s gorgeous – I’m glad you got what you wanted. I actually gave mine away years ago – but every single morning, I make my wonderful cappuccino, in my Breville…

    Hi Sarah,
What a great story…and I love how you told it! :-) It isn’t fair, is it…that men always get the better deals?! Same thing seems to happen here with car shopping and car repairs…totally not fair! I can’t wait to see what comes off your list next time! Susan
P.S. Got cha down for Tablescape Tuesday!

  12. Rhoda says:

Sarah, you’re SO cute! I love your thrifting stories. How fun that you take the Mr. with you…mine will NOT go with me ever. But, that’s OK, he doesn’t mind me dragging stuff home.

Glad you found that coffee pot…yes, Corning ware is good stuff.

  13. RetiredAtLast says:

Susan from Between Naps On The Porch sent me a link to your website. She thought I would enjoy it, and she was so right.
Careful when shopping for CorningWare. When I bought my first pieces about 40 years ago, it was stovetop, oven, microwave, refrigerator, and freezer safe. Not necessarily so today. A lot of the newer pieces are not stovetop safe. Make sure when buying today that the pieces are vintage or it is printed on the bottom that they can be used on the top of your stove, not just in the oven.
Can’t wait to go on your next treasure hunt.

I just started reading your blog, and I love your style. It is so fresh and I like the lightness of it’s spirit. I am landlocked in Colorado, so I love the chance to ‘get away’ to the beach.

Your blog will sustain me through the winter months. Thanks for sharing!

I remember those coffee pots! Oh, I wish I could find some oars. I’d love to hang them on the wall with my quilts folded over them.

    Hi Sarah,
Well, you scored big-time this weekend. :) I love the Corning Ware coffee pot
and it will certainly fill your cottage with that wonderful aroma of brewing coffee.
I don’t even own a regular coffee maker – I have a espresso machine and as much as I love my latte’s – you just don’t get that wonderful smell that you get from brewing coffee. Can’t wait to see what you do with those oars. :)
    Have a happy day!
    Vicki

  18. Melinda says:

Wow what a blast from the past! My parents had that exact same pot – in fact i wonder if they still do have it! They also had all the cookware to match so i am going to have to suss this out! I bought some oars some weeks back and just love them but am unsure how /where to display them. They are currently sitting atop a window pelmet!! Love your finds, Mel xxx

  19. Beachy says:

Well now you have something in common with my Mom… she had the same percolator when I was growing up! Good taste! =) I see some of your other readers have said their families had the same pattern, too! It was a very popular one back in the early 70′s. =)

  20. bj says:

You are the cutest thing…I am thrilled I found your cute blog.
Yes, I LOVE Corning Ware, too. I have 2 coffee pots, one a 12 cup and the other a 6. So cute. I love the bowls, too.
I am old…so I remember when they all first came out. For the life of me, I can’t understand why they quit making them. They are all wonderful pieces so buy all you want. You won’t be sorry….
Come over to see me sometime…
    love, bj

Those little blue cornflowers brought back memories.

  22. Kathy sue says:

Hi Sarah, I am grinning I had that coffee pot for years. We got it for a wedding gift in 1970, unfortunately I no longer have it. We got so much corning ware that we had duplicates and took them back to Macy’s and bought our first stereo for $400. Can you believe that. It is funny how what was once so common becomes collectable eventually. I love that you found it and enjoy that percolating sound. It reminds me of the old maxwell house coffee commercials. See, I am still grinning. I would love to see your list of “What I am looking For”. I find your mind so creative. Keep it up you are wonderful Smiling and a grinning , Kathysue

  23. bj says:

Oh, me too, Sarah…I love corningware so much. i have both the small and the larger coffee pots and several bowls…bowls are DEVINE to cook in. i still am in awe that this product was dropped for something else. EVERY one used to use it but not anymore, so buy up all you find. you will love cooking with it.
    love, bj
