Desk and Chair Makeover Before & After

I don't know if you remember that a few weeks ago I bought, not one, but two desks, which is doubly odd seeing as I am, as I type, sitting at a pretty nice desk that I already owned.  Of course I was pre-thinking my Professional Collector title and practising…

I've been working on it over the last week or so, being not well last week seriously halted any progress and it feels like it's taken forever to get this baby dressed and ready for a new life in the cottage…last night I finished sanding down and was jigging around all pleased with myself, hee hee.  It certainly needed some TLC when I scored it, but it's turned out divine, I do believe?

errm, and I just had to say thanks so much for all the comments yesterday, the giveaway certainly pulled some leetle peeps out from lurkdom, as I read them (with a beer) I can't tell you how all of a sudden I had a rush of horror, oh my goodness, my post didn't sound like I wanted people to leave nice comments about me in order for them to enter…I went back and re-read and no that was not the case at all, so thank you…

and another thing, I've had a few emails asking me if I have a cleaner, a housekeeper (pah!) and do I have a secret to getting things done and someone asked me jokingly, at least I took it in a kind, happy, jokey way, if I ironed my undies - like oh ya, of course I don't, that's Mr Beach Cottage's job!! That really couldn't be farther from the tuth.  But I'm telling you if I did have time I would iron my undies just because I'm weird like that *wink.

Just to get the record straight, I started this blog to help me focus on the things in life and the cottage that were good and ways I could get this fixer-upper house by the sea we'd bought into some kind of home without spending too much money.

ABeachCottage blog is doing it's job for me, keeping me from avoiding the stuff that ain't so good from taking me down (you can read more about this here) and a place that I never want to be again.

I'm so glad some of you have hopped on and are enjoying the ride.

The desk and chair are just great. I love them. I have to get a bit more game, so that I can tackle some bigger projects! I scored a great little stool at the tender centre at the weekend, so will have to give it a little makeover!!

  3. Suzann says:

Sarah it’s lovely. You did a wonderful job on both pieces.
I of course am chuckling at your good old fashioned phone on the desk. Very vintage! (okay, I say that because here all the phones are so hi-tech that some don’t even look like phones).

  4. Jo says:

Love the makeover, but then I’m not surprised. You always do a great job.

As always, you did an amazing job! I wish I could HIRE you to do that to some of my furniture. Would you mind doing a little step by step instruction on how to white-wash furniture like this desk? I am afraid mine won’t turn out so nice :-( THANKS!!!

I’m so glad I hopped on too! I’m thoroughly enjoying the ride, and love your posts. I have been taking anti-depressants for long-term depression most of my adult life, 25 years now. I just wish they’d had something for me when I was a kid, as life was bleak and dreary due to it even then. It is truly deadly, and people need to understand it is a disease. After all, the husband is a psychiatrist. Long-term depression, left untreated, over time ruins parts of the brain. For which there is no cure.

  13. Sarah, I wish you lived here in the States, I’d invite you over for tea and decorating :) I just adore your style and this desk looks absolutely amazing. Any tips on how to get the sanding just right? It looks perfect on your desk with the peeks of sanded wood. I want to try this out on a piece of furniture and was just wondering if you can offer any tips on how to get it right.

    Well said !
That is what I like about your blog (aside from the humour of drive by thrifting adventures) is that you are as real as the rest of us, busy schedules, a budget and dream of creating a nice little nest for your family best of all with a beachy theme.

    Hi Sarah :)

The desk and chair turned out beautiful. I see you have a corded phone… I think I need one too. My youngest has never seen one like it and I think it would be funny to watch her trying to walk off with it. I’m sick, huh? LOL
