Howdy partners, how's it going?
Having just come back from coffee and walking on the beach, I have to say that Monday mornings could be a whole lot tougher around here, though coming home to a cottage that looked like it had been burgled it was so messy and a pile of laundry so huge it nearly hit the ceiling is always a good thing to burst one's happy-to-live-by-the-sea bubble.
Anyway, this is my latest trash to treasure thrifty makeover. There is a joy for me in trash to treasure, particularly in ones like this where even a half hour of therapeutic painting makes such a difference to a piece that, might otherwise, have found itself not long for this world.
And see just how bad this one was, with the added benefit of a beautifully cut hole in the bottom shelf.
What caught my eye in this though was the chippy layers of paint, something money cannot buy and the detail to the top…I thought this might look nice with a coat of primer (I use an anti-stain primer/sealer) and then a couple of coats of beachy white. I wasn't sure whether or not the top would clean up well enough to leave it without painting, Mr BC thought not but I thought I'd leave it and see how it turned out.
So I spent a while on the top, I gave it a clean to start with and then hand-sanded with a rough and then a very fine sandpaper. I like to hand sand, and though I surely see the benefits of my power version, actually it's nice to just put a bit of elbow grease into a small project like this. At various stages throughout I also disinfected it with a good dose of Dettol, I like to do this, just call me obsessive.
So the top came up better than I had hoped, a fine layer of pale yellow under the light pink (oh yep another piece of colour creeps on into the cottage does it not?).
I think we all already know I have a weakness for one-off vintage furniture, the shabbier the better, but with this one it didn't seem to fit anywhere and I wasn't sure where it was going to go, it sat by the dining table for a while to hold bits and bobs, but really I didn't like it there and so it took a step back into the garage, not the most pleasant of places to be I would say.
And then yesterday afternoon I was doing those Sunday things you do, just mooching around, the kids were outside, Mr BC was writing notes again and I was reading a magazine, where I saw a little table in an en-suite bathroom with a vase of flowers and a white bowl to hold make-up and such like. The table, though black, was similar to my little found one and it suddenly hit me that it was just right for a space in the en-suite. Just right to hold a few bits to touch up as you fly out the door. I don't know about you but I need serious cosmetic refinement in the mornings and you'll rarely either find me without help. Au natrel just never did work for me people.
Well I love it and it worked well in there this morning – a double whammy then, aesthetically pleasing both of us.
So in other Beach Cottage news I am still making shutters, thought that was a good idea at the time, and now have some shuttered and some uns-shuttered windows…and I am cooking up a makeover for the wc, I have to hesitate to call it a Powder Room, I mean it's just big enough to get oneself in there. At the moment there's one toilet, one horrid teeny hand sink and one ugly aluminium window, soon I'm hoping there'll be a whole new look going on in there. Watch this space.
blogged for Met Monday and Rhoda's thrifty monday, thanking you girls…

Love your “reinvented” table and the whole bathroom. Your style is beautiful, and worthy of imitation!
Where in the world do you find all these treasures so often? This is an adorable little table…I want one, too!!
Well done, a fabulous do-over once again, with just the right touch of colour to brighten the place up to celebrate the arrival of spring.
This is a lovely transformation – I can’t imagine it have ending up anywhere else

Most excellent, Miss Sarah.
Hi Sarah it looks perfect sitting there, it looks as though it were made just for that space.
Alison
The little table looks amazing and I also love the tall shelf in the first picture. I’m itching to find my way around our new town and see if there are any good spots for thrifting. You’ve got me motivated to get out there!
Great job. It’s come up a treat.
Another perfect piece saved from landfill!
I love the shape of that table which is what makes it so great – I cannot say that about every piece of makeover out there, or most, really… well done.
Exquisite little table. Well done! I have one similar in style but without the cute feet the I found many years ago and have in my hallway. Had to replace most of the top. But has the pretty curve under like yours.
As for ‘The Book Depository’ I totally agree. Just received ‘Simply Country’ and the fabulous ‘The Kitchen Linens Book’. Can’t get these here easily and certainly not for the price!
One Happy Camper! Irene x
I love it. Like you I favour ‘the shabbier the better’ viewpoint. It makes me laugh when I buy a piece of old furniture and the seller points out its imperfections like chipped paint etc. That’s actually why I’m buying it!
The table looks great, and I love the splash of colour from the tulips!

I am so drawn to the tulips! The table was the perfect addition.
The table really turned out great. It looks perfect in its new home.
Looks lovely! I have a table very similar and have a little corner in the main bathroom I thought it may look okay in. Now, you may have just convinced/inspired me to give it a go! Needs another coat of paint first though.
Stunning as always!!!
I have given you a blog award so please pop by my blog to accept!
Sarah
Oh you clever, clever girl. You are SUCH an inspiration! Don’t ever stop! A-M xx

You have the “touch”…just perfect! Great find and I soooo share the love of furniture “rescue” that you have. Any trips to the auction lately? That post you did on your first visit was brilliant.
What a clever idea. I wish I had your energy and ambition. I guess it’s just a matter of putting your mind to it and then starting. Stopping by from SITS.
That is such a girly,pretty table…love it(and your good size bathroom)Hope you are well,all the best,Chrissy
Beautiful outcome! I love the chippyness too!…Christine
SO pretty! So fresh and clean! I just love it!!!!!
Oh, I sure do love the lines of that table, and the top is perfectly chippy!
What a wonderful way to start a day, by walking on a beach! That’s so funny, your saying it looked like your home had been burgled! I feel that way myself, quite often!
Lovely find, Sarah! There’s nothing like weather and time to show the true beauty of a piece.
Fabulous thrity treasure makeover, Sarah. I’m looking forward to your WC/powder room makeover! I know it will be great!
That looks beautiful! You’re little table looks perfect sitting there, and I love the tulips! The little pop of red is lovely in your home.
I’m not much of a betting woman but if I was, I would have bet (with Mr. BC) that you could not do much with that piece. However, once again, you have worked your incredible magic! It turned out so cute and it looks perfect in its new home!
i love white, it’s so clean, and i especially like it for the powder room…thanks for sharing.. maureenlynne
You must have magic hands! And I know creativity is just spilling over!!! Your home is so lovely and peaceful. I love it!
Rhonda
I love this little table. It looks great!
Mrs Beach Cottage,
First of all, thanks so much for coming over to th Armchair housewife and leaving me a comment. Second, I love love love this table! And it looks like it was meant to be in your washroom with those towels on it. And I really love what you did to the top of the table, that is a great tip to leave the top cleaned and sandded and paint the bottom.
I love the look and feel of your blog and consider yourself followed.
Blessings!
This post looks like an article from Country Living magazine…WOW! Great metamorphosis!
Love your style & love your photography skills!
You’ve done it again!! The pop of color from the flowers is extra special!!
Amy
So shabby yet so chic, looks great!
Great table – I am looking for just such a “skinny” table to do up for my bathroom at the holiday cottage.
Put a post up recently with lots of pics of the cottage as we are considering a house swap holiday. Have you even considered such a thing?
Lovely table for the bathroom. Jackie
Love what you did with the table Sarah and your photos are stunning as usual!
It looks fabulous (great photos too, btw).
Love it in the bathroom.
Thanks so much for the visit!
Love, love, love it, Sarah! This is the perfect place for it!

It looks beautiful there! As though it were made for that space. And I am so excited to see some red! You know me and red, Sarah. Those tulips just look so elegant there in the pitcher.

Great place to get ready in the morning….
You lucky thing where did you find it? I have been looking for a table just like that to put in my hallway so I can throw the mail on it when I come home and I have been searching for months to no avail! Anyway your table looks fantastic!!
Sarah…it’s perfect there! And the flowers are perfection against the white…really stunning! I was wondering…did you try to fix the hole or just not worry about it. I think it’s fine with the hole…just more character.
Your table metamorphasis is gorgeous. Well done.
Good luck with your trifle.
Have a blessed day!

Hugs!
Kristin
Spot on! And those tulips…..
I love your pretty little table. You are always up to good things..you make me want to start a project! I cannot wait to see your shutters. I am a shutters gal myself, so I will be watching to see the finished product.
