Beach Cottage Vintage Linens & Fresh Flowers

IMG_0662

G'day all you lovelies.

I have holed up in this bed for the best part of the last four days, some kind of flu viral type thing.  Some have fleetingly whispered the word swine flu in my presence…

Now I have to tell you last week was the first week I have not made chicken stock and then soup for my natural flu-buster.  What does that tell you huh?

On Sunday after three days of wretched holed-up-in-bed-iness I managed a couple of hours down the beach, the twinkling sunshine on the water certainly made me feel better, but before long I was back in here.

When I'm sick laying around, a pathetic patient, I crave things like fresh linens, flannel covered hot water bottles and flowers do you or is it just me this one step away from madness?  For me climbing into fresh, line-dried, sun kissed linen when you're sick makes it all ever so slightly better.

This is the Beach Cottage domestic take on some scary looking 'cold & flu virus' potion in a bottle – the freesias picked from the garden by one of the kiddos and these vintage linens (pillowslips from garage sale of dearest old lady) were sitting freshly washed, pressed and with little lavender bags tucked between them (and please don't think me all domestic goddess but I do tend to rather enjoy the smug little feeling of a linen cupboard stacked with pressed white vintage linens while all around elsewhere is, of course, chaos).  Thank you God for small mercies my mother would say.

So here I am this beautifully sunny Australian Monday morning, feeling ever so slightly better but still pretty pathetic.  I am hoping to get the WC makeover finished this week (this has to be my longest makeover) ever) and start some treasure hunting for old vintage kitchen cupboards.

Can ya send me some blogland healing vibes over the oceans?  I'm drinking hot lemon and honey – got any other suggestions girls…

Catch ya later

    Poor thing!
    Feel better!

I have no suggestions for feeling better though, I’m useless. When I am sick like that I don’t care about my surroundings or food or drink! I just want to be left alone with no comforts of any kind (not even well-meaning well-wishers!).
I’m glad there are things that perk you up though!

    Beautiful pictures!
Feel good. I’ll say a prayer.
    All the best,
    Eileen

  2. perfect. as always !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. ChrisC says:

You are definitely a better person than me,’cuz if I were sick, with the flu, somebody would be waiting on me hand and foot.
But I do hope you feel better, real soon.
This flu-bug is not to be taken lightly.

  4. sara says:

I’m hearin ya – we’ve been struck down with it too. I get fed shots fresh neat squeezed lemon juice when I have the flu. Its yuk but aparently it helps.

Oh to have a flower picker and a fresh-linen-bed-maker on hand when I’m under the weather :) Hope you feel better soon.

  5. Susan says:

Sweetie, I’m sorry you are feeling bad…but scooch over on that bed and I’ll bring tissues and DVDs to watch.

  6. OMG! Sorry you are sick, but imagine my shock at seeing blue in your bedroom! I love it, as I have the same combo in my home, but last I looked, your bedroom was all white. Hope you feel better soon, I’ve known many folks with the same crud here in the US of A.

  7. justine says:

Ah I have a recipe that I always turn to when ill.Actually I have a whole ritual to sort myself out

    1x lemon
    tbs honey
    pinch of cayenne pepper
    splosh of apple cider vinegar
    2 cloves garlic
    1/2 tsp ground ginger
All the above in a mug o hot water, steep 10mins, strain consume!

I spray whole house esp where I/patient is with tea tree oil in a water spray bottle-this kills airborne bugs better than anything I know of – its kept my friends kids from the bugs this last winter!!

Then gargle with a glass of water with 1-2drops tea tree oil-magic stuff

    Finally Garlic Soup!!!
    8cloves garlic!!
    2xlarge potatos skin on
    3-4 cups water
    1 bay leaf
    sprigs fresh sage
    sprigs fresh thyme
    sea salt and ground pepper
    boil,then simmer 15mins

It all sounds a bit full on but I was soooooo sick a couple of years back that I never want to g down that track again so this is my trick and of course hm made chook soup, fresh linens and def flowers to make me smile.

    Hope this helps a little
    X Justine
oops its a very long comment prob coulda emailed!!!! ;)

Do I detect a slight bit of colour? That pale blue on the beside drawers is my fave.
Hmmm hot lemon and honey will always go down better with a slurp of rum or scotch. Does wonders if you have a temperature. Funny, I actually very rarely drink (and can you believe, I have teenagers!@#@!) – but this always seems to to do just the trick. Hope yo are feeling better soon.

  9. So sorry to hear you are not well, Fifi!

I have a little tummy thing going on and am considering postponing my regular check up with the doctor tomorrow…too sick to go to the doctor…:-).

Beautiful post. Your photos are very soothing to me, this evening.

  10. Sorry Sarah…see what I mean…not myself at all!!!

  11. cherrie says:

If it is not very windy sitting in the sun is great – even broiling in the sun. Hugs from up the coast. Cherrie

  12. Marsha says:

Love the door leaning on the wall – what a great look and the whole room is just perfect!

  13. Morning T says:

I’m sending positive vibes your way Sarah. Feel better and finish that powder bath so we can all see your fabulous work! Pics of your bedroom are beautiful!!

  14. fiberdoodles says:

I sure hope you are feeling better soon! I hate being sick ;(

    Sharon

  15. Bev says:

Hope you feel better…. cup of tea and some crackers. Or if it a stomach thing I get coke syrup and it helps tummy ache :)

  16. Sofia says:

I hope you feel better also. Sometimes a little sunshine is the best medicine. Some of the flu bugs take a few weeks to fully recover from. Sounds like you are on the mend slowly. Have someone else make you some chicken soup!!. Love the bedding too!.

  17. Sue says:

Mmmm, if it is anything like what I have just recovered from, it will take nearly two weeks, and your energy has been sucked right out of you, your throat is a trail of razorblades, and your head when you cough could easily blast off your neck at any time…Nurafen and hot salty water to gargle, oh and a nice comfy bed to crawl into!
I hope you feel better soon, and it is amazing how much the sea air can help!
    Sue

  18. Journaling Woman says:

I love the cottage look and blue and white. I think your bedroom is healing in itself. I also think hot tea is the cure for all.

    Blessings

  19. Alison Gibbs says:

What a gorgeous bedroom to be ‘sick’ in.
Hope you are soon feeling better and bouncing all around the place.
    Alison

  20. Pearl Maple says:

The bedroom is looking lovely and fresh in the bright winter sunlight. Do hope you are feeling better soon, can recommend in addition of either mandarin juice (much sweeter than OJ) or good old Berroca, the Aussie fixer upper for everything that ails you.

  21. julie says:

    Hi Sarah
Hope you feel better soon. I can send you healing vibes from right here in Sydney.. Try garlic and horseradish tablets. Smells disgusting but often helps.

Well your beautiful room here has certainly helped me.. I am about to spring clean… on a long needed break this week so my apartment is going to get the once over. Love the touches of blue!!!! and the crochet throw… gorgeous.

    Take Care x Julie

  22. So sorry to hear you’re sick. Not sure if they sell Airborne in Australia, but that works really well for me. I especially like drinking the nighttime hot apple cider formula right before bed. I agree that climbing into bed all made up in fresh linens is such a cozy feeling. Get well soon!

  23. Get well soon! Maybe your kids can brew you some chicken soup.

  24. Alison says:

    Aahhhhh poor you.
    Feel better very very soon.
    lots of love

  25. Hugs from wet and damp N Ireland.

    Wishing you a speedy recovery.

No suggestions other than it is a great opportunity to catch up on your blog reading, and dreaming of more “stuff” being discovered to paint white!

  26. santamaker says:

Hoping your “bug” is about over. Being sick is no fun, but in a way, lazing around in a bed made with freshly laundered linnens, covered in decorator magazines, sipping on lemon tea and feeling no guilt about it….. makes up for it a teeny little bit! Get better, Sarah. Your room looks great as usual..loving the door up against the wall and your blog is ever so professional looking. Fantastic job!

  27. bj says:

O, so sorry you are sick, Sarah. I just hate not feeling well. It sounds as if you are doing all the right things to help yourself along.
And…I nearly fell out of my computer chair when I saw…*gasp…blue in your bedroom. I had no idea!! It looks really great.
Hoping you feel better soon, dear one.

  28. m says:

Those tiny flowers look like tons a happiness! So cute!

    m ^..^

  29. So sad to hear you haven’t been feeling well but I suppose if one were sick and needed to be in bed, this would be THE place to be. Your lovely bedroom (with the hint of blue!) would certainly make me feel better. Rest up, my dear! :)

  30. beth says:

Oh, I hope you start feeling better. I HATE the flu. But being able to relax and rest in a cozy bed with my loved ones taking care of me makes it a little better. :) Your bed is beautiful. I love the blue pillow cover. So pretty. Get well soon.

  31. Jen says:

I’ve admired your sense of taste for a long time now, but never posted. Love the side table, and I sure hope you’ll be feeling better soon. Hot water, honey, and lemon mixed together (or just hot water mixed with powdered lemonade mix in a pinch) is great to help you feel better, as is hot tea. Prayers and good thoughts going up for you!

  32. Courtney says:

Oh Sarah, feel better soon! When I get the flu, I live on a steady rotation of tea, orange juice, and naps till I’m healthy again. Your bedroom looks like the perfect retreat to keep you comfortable till you have your health back.

  33. Vicki says:

So sorry to hear you’re not feeling well – hot tea with honey, lemon and a touch of brandy was a little trick my Grandmother taught us. It works!
I really do hope you feel better soon.
    Vicki

  34. Hope you’re feeling better soon! I always drink orange juice and lots of warm tea when I’m sick. And, yup, chicken noodle soup always soothes the soul.

  35. Tricia Rose says:

If you make a tea with one spoonful of grated fresh ginger and honey once you feel slightly better, it will sharpen you up. Don’t do it until you have turned the corner.

You’ll know you’re better when your plans to get up and do something turn into a crackle of irritation that you’re having to lie here when you could be painting! Or sewing! And somebody has left a sock on the floor!

  36. Sami Melton says:

oooh… awwww… So beautiful! That door is amazing! So sorry you have been feeling poorly – add a little whiskey to your hot drink! (I personally don’t drink but only a couple times a year when my hubby insists that he adds a dash of whiskey to my hot water, lemon and honey) It is amazing how it makes me feel better almost instantly! Get some rest and feel better soon because I just can’t wait to see your made-over wash closet!

  37. Oh, hope you are feeling better by now, Sarah. Love your new header with your photo on there, cute, cute. And of course, your pics are always inspiring. Thanks for playing today!

  38. Brenda Kula says:

Plenty of fluids. Rest. Take this time to skim through old magazines and tear out the pages you like and put in a folder for your future inspiration pages. Daydream a lot. Think up wonderful things you’re going to do and shop for once the bug has run its course. And naturally, keep up with your blogging buddies so you don’t feel lonely.
    Brenda

  39. cathleen says:

You are ill and yet, you still have the creativity ability to post the most beautiful words and photos. Really, reading this was quite heart-warming…I’ll have to remember to read this again when I get sick. I mean who could possibly resist fresh linens, lavender, hot water bottles, and lemons and honey. Cozy…very, very cozy. Hope you feel better tomorrow!

  40. That bed would cure just about any illness…that and the beach :) That bug is just hanging around cause it so comfy there!
Lots of water and lots of sleep…that’s the ticket

  55. I am sorry you’ve been under the weather…I have literally been ill with a similar funky virus something or other since August 8. I am *just now* (knock wood) starting to feel better. How could that be?!

All that said I am thoroughly enjoying catching up on your blog. I am loving your newly painted white-found-in-the-garage table — I still can’t believe what beauty you are able to pull out of a can of white paint! You are amazing. Congrats, too, on the Artful Blogging — how cool is THAT?!
