Garage Sales, $5 Deck Chairs & Mr BC makes his Debut!

IMG_1305

G'day sweeties, it's early Sunday evening here at the Beach Cottage.  We spent the morning down the beach, the kids on boards, and Mr Beach Cottage went for a swim while I sat on the side drinking coffee and chatting.  There's a storm brewing up as I type, I soooo love that, and if it really starts to pour with rain, which I hope it does, we might go down to the sea with a flask of something hot…

So I thought you would like to see my $5 deck chairs, recently found on a garage-sale-treasure-hunt.  As soon as I saw these, there was no doubt they were coming home with me, not because they are particularly special, or a rarity and for sure they held no value to the owners of the home who were getting rid of them, but to me I was attracted by the weathered wood, something I surely cannot buy.

It was Saturday morning and Mr BC and I were out on our own and decided on an impromptu garage sale session.  We grabbed ourselves some coffees, the local paper and plotted our route.

We pulled up outside a couple of garage sales next door to each other – newly built homes and I wasn't too hopeful we'd find anything there…I would much rather find an old ramshackle house with an old lady with old treasures waiting for a new home than a young family with heaps of plastic toys on the lawn…but one thing I've learnt of this thrifting journey…you never know, what you will find…where.

There were two of these little beauties, in a bad way, with built-in mould but I thought they could be easily recovered and after a quick look I knew that it would take little more than ripping off what was on there and stapling on some new canvas.

IMG_0843

The garage sale holder was desperate to get rid of them she told us.  But I wasn't interested in her first price of $20 – when I first started thrifting I wouldn't have even blinked at this price, but now I evaluate much more what the item is worth to me, what I would pay for it new, and then I kinda evaluate the balance between the two.

I've wanted deckchairs for a long time so the worth to me was pretty high, though, to be honest I still want much older ones, with old faded canvas, the proper thick stuff that you don't see any more.  They remind me of England and those lovely seaside towns where rows of them are laid out on the promenade and old dears sit contentedly knitting, with their husbands collapsed beside them asleep in full suit and tie.  Candyfloss towns with deckchairs where we'd go for a day out sometimes, and eat ice-cream, throw big old pebbles from the beach and drive home, tired, salty and sun-kissed.

Sooo, with all those deckchair romantic memories floating around my head,  I got my chief negotiator to wangle the price to $5 each.  Done deal.

I've not done any make-over-ing to them yet and in fact as I sit here thinking about this and mused about it a little bit more, I may well move on from my initial thought of using the heavy cotton stripe I already have in my fabric stash…to sourcing some real canvas for a much more durable, authentic feel.

I tried one of them out this afternoon – just stuck it on the deck with a new magazine from England –  Period Living and the light beginning to fade, rain in the air…

IMG_1315

What do you think?   Do you like my deckchairs for a few dollars a piece?  I hope you do…but really, who cares?  I love them, they're me and thrifting them is saving resources and our Earth for those Beach Cottage kiddos.  Gotta love that…

Anyway, I'm going.

There's roast pork in the oven, potato waiting to be mashed and the kids have crashed out watching Grease in the Family Room…I just love that Sunday evening mooching

I hope your weekend was as good as mine was and that you, too, may well have found pleasure in a thrifted thing or two…

Beach Cottage Family Room Before Reveal…and After

IMG_0969

G'day my lovely blog friends, how is it out there?  I am sitting here nursing that old window back to life, boy oh boy I'm still on a junk high from that.  With my coffee this morning I reviewed lots of places for it and because of it's bulk and because it lends itself to hooks I've decided it will go in the hall, here, above the old dresser.

Back to today and here I am again wowing you with the wonderful pictures of the open house of this old cottage (you can click on all photos to see them much larger)- to be honest since I found those photos on that old phone, I can't get enough of these reveal posts, talk about spurring me on for more projects..watch out Bunnings, here I come.

So with the Family Room Before please note the stunning doors, decor and floor.

Look past that and see the light flooding in, the plain walls plus molding and floorboards, the DIY-er's dream

House Lounge 2

So as with the other rooms (dining room before/after here, sitting room before/after here) that needed serious help in this tatty old cottage we had a whole lot of work to do in this room.  I don't need to tell you how much I wailed and whinged.  Do I?

So we cleaned, disinfected and prepped the walls and then painted everything in a simple standard white.  Next sanded, filled, varnished and sealed the floors.  So this was a blank canvas to work with.

One of the things we liked about the cottage on that fateful Open House day was the little sitting room to the front separate from this Family Room at the back but I wanted to make this area nice also, not just a place for the kids to trash.  Though they often try.  And succeed.

I wanted it sectioned off somehow and to create a multi-functional living room with lots of places for us all to do the things we like to do.  First I used the big IKEA unit as a room divider but it didn't work at all, cut the room up, blocked the light and encumbered the flow.  But once I'd done that I knew the division needed to be lower down with furniture and rugs to maintain the light…

IMG_0921

So I went for sofas to create a separate area.  I think these are the biggest splurge here at the Beach Cottage and lots of people have asked me if I am totally off my head buying white leather sofas with 3 children and more are my kids or guests alowed to move?  Well now, I'm not sure if I'd buy these again, not because of the colour but more because of the leather - I have been very used with our other sofas to pulling the covers off every few months or so and shoving them in the washing machine.  Can't quite get away with that with leather.

I wanted a blend in this area of mix and match textures – wood, wicker, linen and leather all work wonderfully together…so next I added the rug to the floor to create a distinct section and I found a coffee table on the side of the road to contrast the clean feel of the leather with the old weathered coastal chic look of the table.  And added a couple of side tables either side of the sofas and the old whitewashed oars to the wall to integrate more natural textures and that laid-back nautical vibe.

IMG_0949

The computer area is a new addition, so that the kids homework and the like is kept in the family zone and means the study is now all mine.  There are wicker baskets underneath and in the unit for the kids to fill with their stuff and to add warmth and tradition to all the white

IMG_0918

I recently added the old vintage table tucked behind one of the sofas – I found it like this, a soft grey/blue with that old faded patina from vintage furniture softened over the years and peppered with peely paint and general shabbiness.  I've done nothing to except clean and disinfect.  I popped an old vintage suitcase on the bottom for some character and use the top of the table for various vignettes when I'm playing Beach Cottages ;-)

 IMG_0930

I cried again at the patio door, not only did I and do I still hate it, it was doubly worse because I don't think it had ever been cleaned.  I spent days, not hours cleaning it, the layers of grime in the runner where it opened had to be chipped out with a screwdriver and the architrave was scrubbed with a toothbrush to wash away the sun-caked dirt.  Nice.
Here's how lovely the door looked before complete with ever so stylish non-smoking sign :-0

IMG_2396

To conceal the patio doors ladies, which I am hoping will be in a skip in the next few months, yeeeeeeehaaaaawww, I added the usual Beach Cottage window treatement, double layer curtains from IKEA.

IMG_0966

I like white flowers and at the moment touches of green on the coffee table and in old tin cans on the side tables…oh and of course, heaps of candles and tealights ;-)

Finding an Old Vintage Window on a Beach Cottage Walk

IMG_0241

G'day sweeties!

My morning started as if often does, here, with a coffee and a walk on the beach

But today I took a detour from my usual oceanside walk to the post office – happily walking along minding my own business, headphones in, pounding for my mental health, I happened upon a skip.

Of course I couldn't not look in.  I mean it was outside an old tumble down cottage in the middle of town.

Inside was the best old vintage window, I've been after one for AGES.

Oooooh ladies!  I was soooo excited!!!!

I tried to lift it out but it was sorta wedged in, I thought about phoning the only friend I have who would understand the finding-a-vintage-window thing, but then thought it might be best left to my Assistants, Mr BC & Mr Teenage BC and their amazing powers to turn our car into the Beach Cottage Junking Mobile.

IMG_1092

It's been there in my mind ALL DAY, aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh, I kept assuming some other Queen of Vintage might have got her little mits on it…and the later it got, the less chance I was gonna have to persuade my Assistant's to go get it… it's all I could think about, I have been positively consumed by thoughts of vintage windows.

I just had to tell someone about it and thought you all might listen, I mean I can hardly turn up at the school jumping up and down about old neglected stuff in a skip, can I?  There would be profuse shaking of the mummy heads.

Out here in the vastness of blogland though, with my vintage-white-lovin'-friends, I love that it doesn't feel weird to hyper-ventilate about old unloved things destined for landfill, moreover I feel positively brimming with anticipation to show y'all.

and here it is…and they just walked in with it…oh god, I love it

I snapped it quickly, photo quality is poor, sorry, it's dark but you get the idea…

IMG_1125

it's much much chunkier than I thought and I hoped that the shelf to the bottom was still attached…it was…it's chippy and peely and has remnants of light frenchy blue paint on it…sigh…sigh…sigh

IMG_1129

I love that you get it (purlease tell me you do) and that I can share it.

I think you'll be jumping up and down with me…?????

…and of course, leaving me suggestions for what on earth I can do with it, all my ideas were based around something a whole lot less errrm bulky than this

IMG_1127

I won't tell you how much begging I had to do to those two to go out after dark and salvage.

I will tell you it involved…um…favours…from cooking favourite dinners to much more, how shall we say, errrm, well you know…favours…

Stop by tomorrow chicklets I will be nursing a vintage window back to life.

Woot Woot, get ya hooters out for me.

It's the little things…I'm one happy gal in a tatty old beach cottage

I guess I'm not a vintage or white purist, I love some modern thrown in with the whole vintage vibe, I suppose that's nothing new, and I love some colour in with the white, which is one of the reasons I like to decorate with it.  It's such an easy neutral to use as a backdrop for playing house and decorating, which if you've been with me for a while, you'll know is something I do way too much.

So, on the weekend, we had the pleasure of nice friends over for some G & T's on the deck and what a gorgeous hand-picked bouquet they arrived with, specially delivered and wrapped …there is, I believe, nothing much better than flowers arranged and delivered by a gorgeous little fair-haired gal is there?

IMG_1044

Yesterday, after the weekend felt but a distant memory and all was quiet at the cottage, after I spent long long hours on my knees scrubbing the floors ;-) I thought I might do myself a little bit of arranging…no one is ever gonna complain about flowers nicely arranged on the side are they?

But actually I did little more than place the flowers in the pitcher, they had already been beautifully arranged by cute little hands.  And how fabulous that they tied-in perfectly with my new print, recently arrived over the oceans to my little Beach Cottage letter box from a very talented girl..sweet Tess from Concord, North Carolina and her chic little shop where she designs & creates, happily inspired by all things natural and island living

{  Tessyla  }

IMG_1068

When I came across these prints I loved the simple modern style and thought they would work nicely here with the vintage pieces, all the neutrals, white and wood floors and I just loved this green one, funny really cos I don't usually do green.

And I just love to simply layer things up, no fuss, nice and laid-back, no frame –  I think it adds that little touch of modern colour propped up casually on the old vintage meat safe…what do you think, do you like it with the white, the putty, and the flowers?

And how fantastic that Tess is offering Beach Cottage readers the chance to win $50 to spend on her site.  Simply leave a comment on this post to enter…

Comments will be closed Friday 18th at midnight.

I'm signing off, it's been a very long, exhausting day full of athletics carnivals, swimming squads and lunch boxes – the bathtub is running as I type, filled with my fave vanilla bubbles, a bottle of something cold on the side and the rest of the evening spent laying on that sofa up there with somone, if I am very very lucky massaging my feet
