A Great Beach Cottage Find ~ Vintage ‘Glory Box’ Before

IMG_2155

G'day lovelies, well the Beach Cottage Witch is still here a little bit…let's hope she goes away soon heh?

Let's talk about good stuff tho, shall we?

Last weekend there was a notice in the garage sale section for a 'Deceased Estate', a 2 minute drive away, a few roads along – sitting there with a coffee on the deck, still in my dressing gown, I pointed it out to Mr BC…I wasn't really in the mood though, you know?  To be honest, I've scored so much lately and been working on painting stored-up things in the garage, that I wasn't full of enthusiasm.

Being 9.30 we'd missed, probably, the best stuff, but nothing exemplifies my motto of you never know what you will find more than this garage sale and like the new houses where we expected nothing but found the old weathered deckchairs at this Deceased Estate we got a boot load of treasure for twenty-one dollars.

When we pulled up, there was no-one outside and no signs, bar a bunch of balloons, it was so quiet, I wondered if we were in fact, gate-crashing a children's party…

Perhaps, it is eccentric to evaluate garage sales on their vintage-treasure-giving-properties, but I do that in the first 30 seconds. One quick all-encompassing potential sweep and that to linger on a stranger's front yard, it has to be good, it can be messy or ahem a bit grubby, I can deal with that, being the real woman I am ;-) .  But, one thing, it must not, in any shape or form try to be anything other than what it, essentially is:  a way for the holder to make a bit of cash, save a trip to the dump and more importantly, recycle their unwanted goods.

Garage sales, for me, must offer at least one vintage thing…next it must have a friendly seller, preferably one willing to give history of items (like the old trunk that came with a history)…and it must have that real feel, you know the kinda rawness that so-called designer-'junkers' we might see on the TV or those who frequent home-boutiques :-) with $45 rattan bells, would baulk at…gotta love me a bit of that kinda real.

Anyway, this one was probably right on up there in the Top 10 of garage sales…offering a plethora of vintage delights, organised, labelled and sorted, prices beautifully realistic…resident 86 yr old grandma full of tales…and a lovely old red-brick Australian bungalow to set the scene…(yes, to me, these old brick bungalows are history unfolding…)

There were so many things to look at in terms of linens and china and piles of books, I didn't quite envisage finding a 'Glory Box' at all.  But after some initial gathereing of a few things, a dollar here, 50 cents there, I made my way to a back bedroom…and a chest of drawers, all marked up and labelled with $10 and the most delightful old vintage round mirror, asking the grand old price of $4.

The vintage-seeking-Beach-Cottage-Treasure-Hunting Squeal of Delight?  Yes, I do think so.

I have been looking for a dresser to replace the horrid, bottom-falling-out-it-is-so-badly-made one from IKEA in the Study that holds our regular linens and to have a vintage mirror to hang right on over it and for it all to be mind-blowingly in my budget, it was almost too good.

IMG_2155

And it just got better and better, as the seller scrawled sold for my oh-so-massive purchase of drawers and mirror for fourteen bucks, in strolled 86 yr old grandma who proceeded to exclaim in excitement 'oh yes we sold the Glory Box!", looking over quizically she told me it was hers, 60 years ago, after the war and she had spent years saving her money and filling it with linens, dish ware and bedding…it was her steps on the road to marriage, she told us…stuff saved for and gathered while 'courting'…and engagement…and eventually to marriage, her words 'a very happy one'.

I sighed, lapping it up, only to be shooed out By 86yr old's daughter who had assumed I didn't want to listen to her ramblings of her old Glory Box and those days…shame…later I went to find her but was told she'd 'gone missing', apparently a regular occurrence *smile.

So that morning was as I said, a Top Ten, and yep there'll be another ten that are there to put you off but I do believe, garage-saling is a state of mind…demanding of both the bargain-hunter and seller…this time we all played our parts and I for one was very happy…

Enjoy your weekend, I hope you might find something as good as this for $10.

I'll be painting the little beauty, bright, beachy white, keeping those beautiful handles intact, and bringing the old glory into the study to sit beside me as I sit at the computer…stacked full of linens, just like it did all those years ago..

The Beach Cottage Witch & the Boys Tablescape on the Deck!

IMG_2601p

Hey beach chicks, how you cooking?  All good here, spent the morning at the dentist but apart from that been pottering here at home.

Last Saturday, those who live here were blown by a tornado passing through Sydney …and landed in a new home, one owned by The Wicked Witch of Beach Cottages.

Let's just say the Wicked old Witch was just a teeny bit grumpy and fed up with those around her assuming that entertaining their guests that evening would take 'a minute to organise' and was rather put out with comments such as 'what exactly is your problem?' with the cottage being…in complete chaos.

So knowing her shortcomings, the Beach Cottage Witch ripped up her notepad on what needed to be done, what groceries needed to be bought, what food need to be prepared…and took herself off to her freshly changed bed for a nice long nap.

When she got up, testosterone was buzzing through the air, all ages of boys were desperately trying to multi-task, smoke was billowing around the cottage (ovens at 250C tend to do that) and there was a faint odour from blue cheese sitting on the side open & getting rather warm…

Not wishing to step on anyone's toes, the Beach Cottage Witch took herself out onto the deck for a nice cold beer before her guests arrived…

There she found a table, all dressed up by boys…rather a lot of stripes going on…but she had to smile to herself.

She'd taught them well.

A Beach Cottage Featured at Houzz & Pottery Barn Giveaway

IMG_0593p

Hey beach babes!

wanna read some more about me?

and all that goes on at this tatty old beach place?

well I was contacted by the fab Houzz…for an interview on my Country Coastal Casual Style…

We fell in love with Sarah's charming home when she uploaded her cottage photos to Houzz a couple of weeks ago. Born in London and raised in a very small house in Kent, England, Sarah, her husband, three children and goldfish have moved to Australia and now call Sydney home.
Sarah and her husband purchased their first Australian home in 2008. Quickly thereafter, and on a tight budget, the couple turned the "sadly neglected" house into a gorgeous beach style cottage.
Sarah loves finding vintage furniture and accessories, painting them white and creating a look of "old beach house ambiance with a fresh new feel". In her inspiring blog, Sarah documents her house renovation and her other life adventures living by the beaches of Sydney.
I'm very happy to introduce you to Sarah and her stunning
beach cottage

Please tell us about your "first meeting" with your house to be

The first time we viewed the cottage it was not only a fixer-upper, it was filthy and didn't exactly smell too good! However right away we knew it could be the one, we had been actively house hunting and rather than the actual cottage, it's location, 5 minutes from the beach, it's large plot on a quiet street and a few old features meant we knew it could be the one. So at that first 'meeting' with the Beach Cottage we looked past the horrors – looked up to the ceilings which were in good condition and fairly high, loved the old sashed windows and sneakily pulled up layers of carpet and linoleum to check out the wood floors. These were some of our main criteria because we knew with these we could work with the country-coastal look I love so much and not a big budget to create a laid back relaxed home a few minutes drive from one of the best beaches in Sydney.

DIY Beach Cottage White

IMG_2515pn

I find myself more and more at the moment drawn to white.  It seems to go in phases like that with me, mostly when I'm stressed and busy or both, I like white.  Which of course is the beauty of a neutral colour scheme.  Decide on colour and you can easily and cheaply add some…for me this is mostly through flowers and linens…and when, like now, I decide to undo it all and sink into the calming blank canvas of white…I can.

I don't know about you, but in the quiet of the day, I try to straighten up the the Sitting Room, tidy up the mess, 'ready' for that time in the evening at about 8 or eight-thirty, when all has finally calmed, the youngest one is sound asleep in bed, the kiddos are back from their various sports, it's ever-so dark outside and time for the oldies to sit down and zone out.

So the other day as I was doing this, I decided it was about time to get going on a little task I've been pro-crastinating about forever – using some old vintage pillowslips to make some new cushion covers for the sofa…to throw in with the putty stripe and linens and the easiest way for me, without spending any money to add a bit of new interest and life to the room (and if you want to see the sofa dressed up differently, try it with new Coastal Cushions here, the before shot of the Sitting Room & makeover here and on a Friday night ;-) here).

IMG_2512

As I finally got the cushion covers done and on I decided to pull the stripe completely..whipped off the putty stripe table runner too, which incidentally was in dire need of a wash and then gave the old painted white table a good clean.

Put away the few accessories that were, ahem, not white and searched the house for white candles, added a couple of shells and tealights….

IMG_2506

{ enjoying the trunk with the white! }

IMG_2557

{ gotta love me some dollar store candles :-) }

IMG_2537

All of a sudden my quick Do-it-Yourself white re-do came together…just how I wanted it…a few old vintage linens, a much-loved squashy sofa, an old coffee table full of life…

candlelight and an oldie just waiting to sit down and watch TV.

Not bad for free, eh?

Good job as it probably won't last long round here…

Labels around the Beach Cottage

IMG_2243p

Morning all!  Or Good Evening if, where you are, you are settling down to bed.

It's good here, I've been for my first run on the beach for two weeks, I needed it, not particularly for the fitness factor (not that I'm particularly fit), but certainly to get my mind cleared and ready for the start of the week.  Ahhhh.   Definitely a bit wobbly in the old legs when I got back here, but brain nice and steady ;-)

Now, less then about the state of my legs –  have you all noticed lately, everywhere, little labels?  On pegs, on baskets, numbers stenciled on shelving.  Little words here and there?

Well when I went to that frenchy shop the other day, everything was labelled oh-so-deliciously, even one tied around a napkin (which gave me the idea to stick one on curtain tie-back).  I thought I might have a go at making one my own and now there seems to be a lot of labels all around us because once I started I couldn't stop…

…on the mirror in the hall…I wanted numbers…but what numbers to choose?…so I went with…first there were 2 of us, now there are 5…

IMG_2252p

on the new curtain on the doorway from the Sitting Room (& find more on that 4 dollar door dressing, should you want to, here) I decided laugh because firstly that's been seriously lacking 'round here of late and secondly I didn't want what 'dream' or 'live' or all of those I seem to see around…but then again I think they'll crop up soon somewhere *smile

Any ideas for some more please?  I wanted something like 'get your backside up off that computer chair and work!' :-) but didn't think that had quite the errrm, same impact….so I'd love it if you wouldn't mind leaving me your suggestions…I really do seem to have had a brain freeze…

on the box that holds those things I should be dealing with…but prefer, rather to procrastinate…

IMG_2281p

Rather than buy these and of course keeping to my mantra, re-use, recycle, save our planet I scrabbled around the craft cupboard in the study for leftover burlap and some old white cotton...just cut the burlap and pulled it a bit to fray the edges and then ripped the white fabric a bit smaller and frayed it…then wrote on it with a permanent marker…it bled a bit…hey ho

See you tomorrow girls and boys…

laugh some..yeah?
