Old Beach Cottage Lanterns, Vintage Finds & Early Days

031p

G'day chickadees, how you all doin' this fine Saturday?

Well I had a very full morning, awoken very rudely by two middle-aged women, who at 5.45am, on their early morning hike, thought nothing of shouting to each other as they walked down the hill past our cottage.

If it hadn't been for the fact that I was wearing little bar the odd dab of Chanel, I may well have chased them down the street….rolling pin in hand.

..not one to be bright eyed and up at this hour as a rule I thought I might as well make the most of it…and the benefit of getting out early?  Firstly normally it means I am alone, always a good thing 'round here.  And secondly means you're first to the treasure.  Usually.

But today I missed out on a vintage leather hatbox (which I must say was so absolutely Anthropologie Delightful I thought twice about accosting the old dealer who had swooped on it before me) and a *huge old vintage mixing bowl, which I spied from afar but missed in a split second and which I had already decided as soon as I saw if from afar that I would purchase & giveaway right here on this blog….best laid plans…

Soooo, anyhoo, after a round of disappointing places (and that happens in this treasure-hunting-game people) I decided to head home for coffee and a bagel…a little sit out the back under the Fig Tree in the cool…and on the way home came across a few of these old beauties…and couldn't pass 'em up.

056p

The lovely lady who I bought them from, proceeded to tell me at length, how they used to light her path before they could afford to put lights in….how wonderful they would look cleaned up…and kindly lectured me in just how I would go about this mammoth clean up of a few old vintage lanterns ;-)

I thought for a quick second about letting her in on the secret.

Sweetie I want them like that.

Money cannot buy old, weathered, rusty and vintage.  With in-built embossing.

But I saved my breath, for sure, she was never gonna get that.

026p

And so I came home to a house still quiet, Mr Beach Cottage still in the land of nod, Mr Teenage Beach Cottage certainly not even anywhere near emerging.

And later went out for more, and came back with lots of little beautiful things, not big things which is what I prefer really, but that's why this Treasure Game is so much fun…

…and I have to tell you, I came across this old book, well really I suppose it is a collection of pages, with two huge staples, I picked it up firstly because I liked the fact that the paper was very aged and beautifully yellowed and also the old typography caught my eye…each page just typed at the top…I thought I might use it for wrapping…

Once I was browsing through later with some Afternoon Tea, I realised what a treasure I have in my possession, for this dear friends & Lurkers is a compilation documenting memories of the residents of a local Nursing Home…from what I can ascertain it was put together in the 60's so these old folks were remembering right back to the 1880's…all sorts of things about this area that we moved our family to from the other side of the world to all these years later…

To say that I feel honoured to have this in my possession is an understatement, it sent shivers down my spine.

And that is why I play this Game.  When one scores, the shivers are pretty darn good.

See you around…

The Beach Cottage DIY Bead Board Paneling & Chickens

645p

G'day lovelies, how you all going?

Well it's the first day back to school today, the long full days of summer hols behind us now…it's really bittersweet for me this year, I crave the routine and schedules by the end of the holidays and I think the kids begin to get on each others' nerves, yet within a month or so I will be longing to get away from all the running around, deadlines to meet and places to be.  I guess that's whey they invented breaks?

I have a full plate of things on my mind at the moment and I need to be careful not to overload…do you do that?  I do.  A friend of mine says she gets around this by putting things in a mental box, so for example paint bead board would be in one box, laundry another, clean old treasure hunting finds another…and that way she feels that life doesn't run away from her…she shuts each 'box' off til it's checked and done…

I guess I'm all or nothing, I'd love to know your ways of keeping everything together…let me know, I think it's great to brainstorm things like this, so input appreciated.

And thanks so much for the chicken feedback, who woulda thought…Jayne left me a message about the Sydney Rent a Chook website, (Jayne I tried to email you but message bounced) and when Mr BC gets home from the city tonight I am sooo gonna try and talk him into renting some chickens for 6 weeks to see if we like it.  I told Mr Teenage Beach Cottage about it, he just rolled his eyes, as if it was one of my schemes and asked the price, when I said $100, his closing comment on the subject was "not bad", so with that reaction in mind there is hope that Mr BC might say yes.  (not of course that I have to ask permission, haha, I might just get 'em anyway though that would require lots of Favours to dig myself out of that hole *wink)

Anyway I came here to talk about the Bead Board and if you want to see how easy this stuff is to put up go here and step-by-step pics here.  Oh yes, with those kids back that was gonna be my first project and was wondering what colour you prefer out of this selection?

644p

The first one is a colour I had mixed for my new grey phase ;-) ..unfortunately the paint guy didn't write the name on the can like they usually do, duh!  (and no British does not have an extra T in it, that people is a typo!) Anyway I wanted a darkish grey that I could play around with…one that should I want to, say paint a frame with in a dark hue, I could, but one also I could add to white should I want a paler grey…

The second one is Castle Grey though it looks for sure, very much more like white in the pics.  I really like this in real life, it is icy white*  and I don't know if I like it because it is stinking hot and humid here today and so is cooling..

Third one is a Dulux colour I had mixed ages ago and ended up using only once, I'm thinking that might be very nice watered down with a slosh of white ?

And last but by no mans least is Dulux White on White, which I don't really need to talk about…another one of of Dulux's super-affordable, good quality, range of whites which in my humble Beach Cottage painting opionion you cannot really beat.

So, the question is beautiful Beach Cottage Readers (and that includes you Lovely Lurkers *smile) what colour do you think?

Don't forget the new Beach Cottage Entry Conditions…read and comment lol!

{ *comments included in the Giveaway to win a magazine subscription* }

I can't wait to see what you think, I seem to have some kinda brain freeze on this, guess I should put it in a box ;-)

see you next time, with one finished panelled Beach Cottage wall woohoo! I'm off to clean out a lovely new treasure hunting find that's very presence is haunting me downtairs…it needs to be madeover and up here with us…

A Beach Cottage and Country Living Giveaway

IMG_7664p
G'day campers, how you going?  After all that waffling in the last post, this may end up short and sweet, it may not.  Glad you all liked the bus blind and thanks for all the emails, if I haven't got back to you I am working on it (still not got my computer yet so things are a tad behind 'round here – a Dell from Hell Update coming soon)

Today, sadly is the last day of the summer holidays for us at the Beach Cottage and after a lovely day spent celebrating Australia Day yesterday in true Aussie style with swim, barbie, boat, beer and sunshine we are all ready to start the New Year properly.

It's gonna be an interesting time for me too…I am starting on a few ventures of my own – more to come on this blog as I get those Beach Cottage Kiddos happy and settled and start to think about me…

Anyway, back to today, I wanted to talk about magazines.  Because mine are getting outta control. And my New Year Kids Back To School Resolution is to sort them out.

Please tell me you have the same problem with magazines and stashing them as I do?  Or am I some sad old bird filling some void with eye candy and then furtively stuffing them in any open and available orifice, to return to at a later date for more lusting?

And it's not even really that I buy bundles of magazines, because I don't.  I have two or three faves that I love and one or two that I buy religiously…the trouble is, and that is how this post started, I cannot bring myself to send the ones I have off to the nearest St Vincent's De Paul.

I always, always buy Country Living, both UK and USA - this is one of the first magazines I came across when I started  stalking, I mean, liking vintage things…but the best thing was it wasn't a general magazine about the 'country' look, it really was a magazine about the country, with interesting articles and features on people living the kinda life I secretly dream about…one where pigs and chickens roam around somewhere outside, where I have a swinging old field gate and all manner of fruit trees in the orchard.

IMG_7665p

OK, that's all a pipe dream, though I've really really tried to get Mr BC to let me get a few chicks (no, Favours, did not work in this case)…he told me I would hate the mess, that I would whinge and whine and moan for England, I scolded him and told him I would love them and wander out there with a basket on my arm, a faded flowery skirt flowing and would talk to them as I happily collected the eggs…he told me that is very much a { insert blue word } joke…and flatly refused to go anywhere near a chicken-buying farm…

But that is what I like about Country Living, pipe dreams, yet just about attainable all the way…

This is comfort reading on so many levels…a good magazine, a cup of tea, a slab of chocolate and an hour tucked away on the deck, in the hammock, or my favourite, mid-evening but early-to-bed and tucked up in bed.

It has to be one of the most comforting things to do…without the brain-power for reading a book or the concentration levels to keep up with a tv plot.

Just a simple page flick here and there and oh-so-much inspiration.

IMG_7669p

And one knows when one might have hit a problem when one decides to decorate with the piles of them that seem to be growing uninhibitedly around the cottage

…when one begins to de-clutter and finds, instead of releasing them to other needy-magazine-lovers, one  instead sorts them into new and different categories

…Like, Really Like, Really Really Like…Archive…Frame…

And so to try and pass-on my obsession to one of you and with my latest penchant to offer you goodies on this here blog, I am suggesting we have ourselves another Beach Cottage giveaway.

Just in case you are in need of a little comfort, a little magazine bolstering.  If I'm still feeling generous, and I'm not in the bad books with Mr Beach Cottage, I'll be signing up more than one of you to a lovely subscription…

see ya later beach chicks, you'll find me Down Under, somewhere under a pile of mags…

A DIY Vintage Bus Destination Sign – Beach Cottage Exclusive!

IMG_7279p

So this is gonna be one of those long posts, ones where I ramble…you get bored and roll that mouse down through the pictures…while I waffle on…

It all started a long long time ago.  In fact when I was still in the Old Country.  I came across some old bus blinds in a junk shop.  Hmm, I'm likin those.  But I walked away not really sure what I would do with them.

Now, sugarbums, I would clutch them to my breast, do the treasure hunting dance and run, run, run as fast as I could back to this old cottage.  Put them on the wall, open a beer and stare at them, with my feet up, in gleeful thrifting ecstasy for a whole evening.

IMG_7310p

However, I have not come across real ones here in Australia, though I sure have not stopped looking for them, for four years.  Certainly I've come across imitations of them, I've seen them on Ebay & stalked auctions wondering whether to bid or not, viewed them on blogs and I've even seen them made into cushions.  Ahem.

I've come across them in shops in Sydney too, but since the real budget kicked in and is still very much in force right down under here in Beach Cottage Land, I haven't even tempted myself by looking at the price tag. As with most things in my life, if I like it, it probably won't be cheap. ( Edited to add:  since writing this post I found myself in a shop up the beaches, and spied the price tag of $1000.  Yes that said one thousand.)

What I didn't expect, on my way to pick up the kids from school just before Christmas, was to see one quietly sitting in the corner of the most lovely florists that I pass regularly as part of my day to day life.  It sniggered beautifully at me from beside the stairs…

I stopped dead in my tracks, staring through the Christmas decorations and flowers.  Sigh.  Sigh.  Sigh.

IMG_7288p

I've been thinking about that unreal bus blind since then.

And then the other day, driving home from a sporting event, musing, I thought surely I must, somehow be able to make one myself.  Think out of the box.

So I thought I'd try black paint on an old frame and print off my own bus destinations.  Beaches ones.

IMG_7313

And I did just that.  Printed off a fictitious bus route around Sydney's beaches….

And stuck them to an old thrifted frame

IMG_7322p

And placed it on the wall in the kicthen…

I love the almost retro feel to it, hinting of days gone by when one might run for the bus in T-Bar shoes and utility skirts, the hand-typed feel of the font, when people sat at a chair with a clunky old typewriter with a wheel and a ribbon not pulled a Blueberry ;-) out of their pocket…

Aaaaaaaabus2

And the days when people got on buses and trams…I remember as a young girl commuting up to the big smoke, transfixed by those iconic London buses…I lusted after their red forms queued up at the bus depot at Victoria, I loved their curved bottoms, with the platform for anyone to hop on as it lurched along…and the ticket inspectors, more often grumpy than chirpy and nearly always Cockney, but mostly offering the term of endearment (or not) 'love' to most everything they said….where you going love?…that'll be 1 pound fifty pence love…you wanna get the Number Fifty Eight bus to there love…

There's certainly none of that here, and perhaps I am some kinda nostalgic fool…alright I definitely am…I can't deny this to me has some kinda vintage-life-gone-by appeal…somehow conveying a slower world of timetables, and shopping baskets, where one's main concern was to set out for a ride on a bus.

IMG_7285p

I wonder what you think?  Don't forget the new Entry Conditions of this tatty old beach cottage…no lurkers, hahaha!!

I have to say, it turned out a whole lot better than I thought it would.   I wondered how the black would go, but in fact I think it anchors things quite nicely…I love the way it's nautical and a little bit whimsical…it kinda speaks to me old beach vintage days….coastal towns…salty breezes…sand sandwiches…

It was easy peasy, even for those with the patience and craft skills of a knat and best of all it cost me under $10, so I was, oh, approximately $990 in pocket.

You can find more pictures, and a step-by-step tutorial of how I did it here.
