G'day, hope all is well with you, we've had a lovely hot and balmy weekend here, rounded off last night with takeaway at the beach…
Further to my recent post about Rachel Ashwell, I was happily minding my own business the other day, when a beautiful old hand-crocheted bedspread (though I'd probably use it as a tablecloth), landed in my path.
That of course is the beauty of hunting for vintage treasure, you really do not know what you will find and where.
I love crochet and started to collect it years ago.(though pls don't think of me as one of those crazed collectors in an anorak who can answer Mastermind questions on crochet, I know nothing more than, it's beautiful and I love the way it makes me feel).
In our house in England I started gathering it and used it in a more Country House Style (and see the Sitting Room with a more Kidston look and Granny Blanket here), along with too much vintage linen, but now rather than the old English look I talked about the other day, it seems to fit in even better rejigged to my laid-back Coastal style, it kinda softens it and I think I need that in my life. You know?
But if you think about it, it's not surprising that it works here…soft, old, made by hand, the perfect neutral palette, vintage and re-cycled… diffusing almost a mellow feel to the bright and oh-so-beautiful Australian light. I was very pleased to come across this, quietly looking for a new home…
Though I have to tell you, my enthusing, fell most definitely on deaf ears round here as I draped it around various places with glassy eyes and dancing feet.
Comments among the males, along the lines of, "**** how is that one different to all the other ones?"
And that my dears, is why I come here.
See you hopefully tomorrow, (and I thought it might make you laugh that I pulled out the Favours Card to get the bead board, panelling, tongue and groove, cladding or whatever we've decided to call it, up and on the wall tonight *wink)
Take care

You can find more crochet around the Beach Cottage here, a post about me as a Professional Collector
here, and here a sweet old vintage crochet used as a tablecloth.

Sarah~ It is beautiful!! Have fun tonight! ;o)
I think it’s gorgeous, you’re right, a softer look that fits in perfectly.
You’ve made me laugh, you are so gorgeous. I whole heartedly agree with Tami

I popped in to say it was so lovely to see the Noritake tea set in your post. My mum had that exact same one given to her in 1964.
It’s gorgeous! Definitely suits you. I am a fan of the favours card! Always works a treat!!!
really lovely…xx
Love the crochet – and I thought that was what the favours card was for? Enjoy your balmy temperatures – I sitting here in pyjamas and a shawl freezing. And it’s Monday morning – why am I not getting ready for work?! Four days snowed in and school still shut and I have forgotten what you are supposed to do in the mornings!

You know Sarah here in blog land we can all happy dance with you over the delight of happy finds and what a lovely example of a woman’s handywork it is.
Good luck with that wall fixing, it will be perfect for showing off your crochet collection.
Lovely Sarah – we appreciate it anyway even if the men or your household don’t!
Can’t wait to see the beading up!
Fortunately our boys ARE at school today!

:D:D
Hugs, erika
love it – the colour and texture.
really like the chair too – is that a new find or has it just been promoted?!
That looks so beautiful! Makes me all green and envious. Talking about green. That little chair snuck in there too, didn’t it. Love it! I am a big fan of your all white color palette, but I am loving the touches of color as well.
Oh, and about that chalkboard sticky stuff. I’ll have a looksie on the roll later if I can track a manufacturer. They had instructions in a gazillion languages on the back so it sould be internationally available (I think the Nester posted about something similar a long while ago).

My aunt used to crochet and taught me how when I was about 8. I wished I kept it up….Your collection is just beautiful.
wow. it is gorgeous, and fits perfectly (no surprise that you knew it would) but it is a surprise element in the room- just the right point of interest, as well as wonderfully scrunchy if you need to cuddle a bit. (cool breeze through the cottage?) jkj

Simply lovely and oh so romantic…a definite touch of softness – love it!
It’s a treasure and it looks perfect as it is perfectly draped on that perfect shade of green chair!
All the best,

Hi Sarah,
Pretty, pretty! And so cozy looking. My mom made me an all white throw like that – I had to special request WHITE because the ones she made for my sisters were really grotesque 1970′s color combos! I still have it and sleep under it all the time. Now that my mom is gone I feel I have her near me whenever I snuggle under it – her heart and love went into that coverlet! That’s probably why we covet those sorts of things for our homes, don’t you think – the love that went into making them. Can’t get that from a big store.
(Not knocking IKEA, though!!)
I would like to have a project to promise favours for – hmmm, I’m sure I can come up with something..
