G'day, life is very good here at the Beach Cottage, although I'm blogging from the bedroom because yep, you guessed it, Dell have still not been in contact and my 6 month old computer sits alone, sad and neglected in the Study.
And a lovely reader sent me a message on Twitter (btw I'd love you to come and chat) to say that she has heard a third person now who has just had this motherboard problem with a new Dell. I'll let you take what you will of that…
~~~~~
Anyway, less of that and onto bedrooms…a very strange thing has happened all because I moved the bed around to under the old sash windows. It feels like things are new and fresh and different and I find myself smiling as I walk into my bedroom or more likely collapse on the bed. Well, at the moment here, that old adage 'a change is as good as a rest' is true.
And that truly is a miracle because it's peaking into the final week of the school summer hols. And all 3 of my children are still alive.
And what else gets me to this place, where my kids are still not begging to go back to school to avoid the Beach Cottage Witch? Well I suppose, I have to say, it's old, grey, vintage doors. In all their glory. Casually leaned up against the wall in my still tatty old bedroom.
The bedroom with the hole in the wall where we haven't gotten around to fixing a grill on the air vent, the bedroom that's a bit antiquated in terms of electrics which means there are extension leads around, the bedroom which really has a tad too much white furniture in it for its size.
But who cares about stuff like that when all that really matters is an old grey door, leaning, satisfyingly alongside all those niggly little less-than-perfect points?
I don't know if you noticed. I don't do art. Or precisely placed family photos, all in a cute little all so perfect row. And it's not because I don't have cute kids. At least I think they are cute…sometimes.. but then I suppose I would do…
I just find I am too picky and change my mind too much for art. I guess you need to know what you like and be prepared to stick with it, if you wanna spend on anything good. And those two combinations don't really go down so well with me somehow.
When we had the most recent photoshoot at the Beach Cottage, I knew the IKEA tulips art canvas thing, on the wall, in the sitting room, wouldn't make the cut…too IKEA-y, too chain store-y. I can handle that. Just call me a heathen
So here I wanted something kinda unique and original, something you couldn't pick up in IKEA or for that matter something you couldn't just throw moeny at and buy…and I fancied a change of look…
Remember I said before about change, I don't think you needed to be a rocket scientist to ascertain that I was leaning towards grey. Perhaps a little later to the party than others?
It's been coming on for a year now…when I painted the old chest that now lives beside my bed, I did the drawers in grey, then there was the black mirror after the trip to IKEA and rugs with dark stripes have crept in.
Though, it's not really much of a move away from white, and that's the beauty of decorating with neutrals and mostly white, you can re-invent in one afternoon and for pretty much nothin'
This little area was totally on a budget…in fact, I didn't spend any money right at this time, all was stuff I already had…
…the door was a junkin' find (of course), the white cushion was made from an old vintage pillowslip, and the stripe was leftover from the bag I made the directors chair I already had (found on the side of the road I believe and re-covered in linen)
…both of the frames I picked up in St Vincent's de Paul (Vinnies to those in the know)…the first one I painted white and distressed, the other one I painted with this lovely grey…I used this cos I wanted some texture (you can see how it looked in the 'before' here) and still the kinda natural feel to the whole thing…as my worry with grey would be that it might be too 'modern' for me.
When I was looking for grey, clutching paint chips to myself I had in my head Frenchy Grey…and even tho I've been to France a whole heap of times, I couldn't put my finger on (nor dare I say it would a Frenchman…any mention of such would probably bring much eye rolling) exactly what this elusive French Grey was…and then when the door was in here I realised it was more Pebble Grey I was after and so I went for that.
Ok, lovelies, I'm off to start painting that beading…Mr Beach Cottage finally got the rest of it on the wall yesterday afternoon…a nice afternoon…he put up beading…I pottered around, a roast chicken with lemon & roast potatoes in the oven…and dinner on the deck…mmm that was nice…
Let me know what you think of the colour – oh, and you know, to my lovely readers who stop by and don't normally comment, I'd absolutely love it if today you might give me the benefit of your opinion. Whaddya think? Like it or not…??
(btw I'm having a giveaway this week and if you give me your wonderful opinions on the door of course I'll throw you in the hat right now…it's a nice giveaway, I promise it'll be good *smile)
Signing out from the Beach Cottage, have a good Monday!
the outtakes of this should you want to see more photos are here
This is one of a few old vintage doors leaning around the cottage now, you can find the story of one we found and madeover here, and it all dressed up in finery here, and a lovely chippy old one that I love and am now wondering where to put here (oh & the magazine article on it here)
I love the grey Sarah. It definitely looks French not modern. I do love change as well. Today I was having fleeting thoughts of Turquoise but came back to my lovely neutrals. Is the door covering the whole in the wall?
And what a lucky home it has! Looks fabulous Sarah! x
Gray is my favorite color, and I particularly love that shade on the door. The knob though is something that I don’t quite fancy, but that’s just me.
Okay Sarah, your wish is my command,
I stop by and leave you a note; it’s my pleasure!
I do very much like the door, it’s color is just perfect and I can understand you are so so happy with it.
Enjoy your day.
Anita
I cannot escape to pose this question which has been on my mind for a while, Sarah! I love your blog, and pictures and life style. I do!!! And having those lovely boys is a blessing, I’m sure! But let us not forget the keyword in that sentence: BOYS! How on Earth can you manage to stick with that exquisite favorite color if yours (which is obviously white) in a house full of boys and dirty shoes to say the least. How can you keep your home so perfect and clean???
Do tell
Hugs, Erika
quite simple Erika, I beat them
…haha, of course not
I get asked this all the time, my lovely readers email and ask am I a clean freak?
you know what, there are a few things
first of all, white cleans up a whole lot easier than you think…most white linens can go on a hot wash (like my sofa covers) and you can bung in some bleach with white to get rid of stains
same with the walls and doors…if I can’t budge a mark, bleach will get it off…can’t do that with colour
thirdly, you may well not believe it, I am not that precious…the photos do not, thank goodness show up the marks
white paint is very easy to ‘touch-up’, you can literally slap it over in one area and it doesn’t notice unlike some coloured paints
the distressed look and white and boys works quite well…I am going for the lived in, vintage, bashed up feel lol
oh and my kids all pitch-in, they are by now means perfect and I have to remind them constantly…but I am a big believer in kids being part of the family by doing chores and those boys will know how to wash clothes and cook when they leave this cottage
…I would be whining WAY too much if I had to do everything myself round here
sarahx
LOVE the color, and love the door. Especially the fact that you can lean it. I wish i could lean, but i think my one year old would find them far too much fun.
Keep up the great blog Sarah,
And please tell Dell to go jump and buy a MAC instead, there a dream.
Kirt
OK, I’m one of those people who always stops by but never comments. So here goes….I love it! That shade of gray is fabulous and the whole thing looks great.
Hey, it’s great here out of the closet!
Hi Sarah,
I like the French grey you chose for the frame. You have always have had great taste, even when you were on Rate My Space (HGTV website). Your style has always reminded me more of Atlanta Bartlett, than Rachel Ashwell. Keep on creating great spaces for us on the beach and those not on the beach.
The Swedish Room
I absolutely love love love the color of that door. It is gorgeous. You just can’t find new furniture with those wonderful colors. It has a hint of being blue grey and blue is my absolute favorite color. Very versatile. It looks perfect against the white too by the way. Love your blog. Keep the awesome ideas and photos coming.
Sarah,
What a beautiful way to start my day. Also, quite perfect for my crazed mind.
Yesterday while cleaning (ugh) I panicked wondering if my white transformation might be unrealistic with kids and dogs. But, about 10 minutes after making that declaration I was calm again.
Seeing that door against the white is just beautiful and I adore your “artwork”.
I myself have been on the hunt for the perfect gray, but as of yet I have not found it.
Enjoy your last week of break.
Loving the door – and your beautiful cottage! I must confess I too am one who stops by here each day and hardly ever leaves a comment!!
ok to be specific, I love the crispness of the bed linen with the faded patina & the just right greyness of the door….that caught my eye…..and the old black book
x
~justine~
I love the colour you have chosen for your door Sarah. If I was laying in bed looking at the grey door, I would be imagining that the door would open to somewhere magical, a mystery place, that would be just mine. Depending on my mind at the time, the places beyond the door would change.
That would be my little imaginary escape.
I do have a vivid imagination though, but there again, I think you do to. Because you can see beautiful things, before you make them that way.
Well, I do comment from time to time, dear Sarah, it’s just no fun to be the 14578th person in a row calling “GORGEOUS”! Of course it’s gorgeous and ya know it. Australia seems to be such a land of treasures that I’m already thinking of ways to make you like me and send me a nice invitation to one of that deck dinners
Greetings from the cold and rainy land of Sauerkraut
Lovely, as always!!!!
I love the door – it makes me feel like there are many possibilities lying behind it . . .
It looks beautiful and I love the color and the old handle on the door. Your style is great, I’m new to your blog but boy do I want to go visit the beach now:)
Love the color it’s stylish, soothing, and just plain perfect! We should all live in such beautiful “tattered” surroundings! Your artwork is lovely and has me rethinking what I want for my own bedroom.
I’m sorry you are still having trouble with Hell…I mean Dell! Sorry, little Freudian slip there!
Have a wonderful day!
Kat
I’m not a grey person at all but your room stills looks great to me because you have it nicely co-ordinated. I think harmony in colours is especially important in older houses and children’s bedrooms because it tends to detract from faults and messiness (a colour co-ordinated mess is better than an unco-ordinated one?!!). Cherrie
Absolutely LOVE the grey door hun, its a perfect colour. I hear you on the French grey thing, I did get that colour by mixing it myself (matching an old wooden trug I found whilst treasure hunting) but mine has a bit more blue in it. I’m thinking I like a bit more a grey now so I may have to repaint a few things !!
Alicia ~ time worn style
Hi Sarah! I adore your blog and visit every morning but have as yet to leave a comment. I love your entire cottage! You have such a wonderful sense of style and I like how you take things and re-purpose them to make them work as you will. That door is lovely! Love that shade of gray and that quaint old door knob! I think that color fits right in with your white and neutrals. Beautiful!
I love the old door! I think that is the perfect gray. And the frames are great too. You are right about decorating with white, it is so easy to add a new color to change things up. I don’t use art either, I also find that I get sick of it too quickly. I am always inspired when I visit your blog. Great job!
I think it looks great – I’d love to try something like that here, but just don’t think hubby would cope with it! I’d like to see more pictures of your bed under the window. Ours is under a window as well and this year I AM going to decorate our room so starting looking at ideas now.
I’ve been reading for a while, commented here and there. I would have commented even without the giveaway but I’m not one to look a gift horse in the mouth.
I admit I’m on the side of color on the walls and every where else I can put it. I think though that the guest bathroom might go totally white. It will be a first for me. Where you are lagging on the grey movement, I am only just getting to the white movement so I’ll only have a white bathroom. I’m looking forward to it.
Oh yeah, and I do like the grey with the black and white. I really do love those three colors (or shades rather) together. For this American, it reminds me of a modern New York style. For the distressed white cottage I think it combines a good vintage with modern. So, go you!
I loved ur decoration…so clean and lovely.Congrats!!!
Hi Sara, the gray is a wonderful contrast with the white! I love it!!!
Sophisticated and inviting at the same time. Good work!
love it!! the door, frames, chair, everything. i am trying to simply the colors in my home and you are such an inspiration.
Hi Sarah,
I think your gray door looks great where it is. I love the old doorknob. I think you should hang something from it – something on a ribbon, maybe.
Hope your computer gets fixed soon!
Hi Sarah! Ok, I’m so loving that door right now. The color to me is kind of a dry cement which is so beautiful and quite natural. That is why I think it goes so well with all your neutrals. The door itself though really floats my boat. That handle just makes me want to know who turned it? Where it lead to? It also reminds me how ugly my own door handles are and that I have to get on that.Ya know just the builders grade silver or gold. Gotta go.I’m hoping to find glass knobs without ordering them for a million dollars! Anyway I don’t think you can make any mistakes when you love it , it works. I can’t wait to see pics of the bedroom all turned around. For me just the smallest hint of sea glass light blue is catching my eye lately but I still can’t get enough of the warm white that has taken me over. Sorry so long when all I had to say was… It looks beautiful! Hoping this week brings you luck with dell.<3
I love the door and the color. My husband would really think I’ve lost it if I tried this idea (and I’ve thought about it).
And as for the Dell – I have a Dell PC and although it was 2 years old I had the same problem. First the fan went, but not without major consequences. Luckily my husband was able to replace the fan, but I still have major problems with it. And I HATE calling support of any kind. I just spend 2 hours getting help installing HP printer software to my HP laptop and it still isn’t right. Then 3 hours with Adobe installing Photoshop, which thankfully they did get correct.
Thanks for letting me rant.
Ok, you want to know how much I love it? I made one of the photos my desktop background so I can click over and look anytime I want. It is just lovely. The grey is just the right touch. Love it so much!
the door is nice because it’s an unexpected subtle piece. I like the texture of the picture frame on the wall, again it is also subtle but necessary. – your simple style (meaning no clutter) and clean airy pieces are soothing and feel peaceful .
I check out you blog everyday – after I drop the 3 kids at school and before I take the dog for a walk, I find it calming and it starts my day with a positive feeling. Thanks for taking the time to blog – I know it is time consuming.
Simply Beautiful! I love the simplicity of it all and the door is stunning! Although it is a cool, french gray, it really adds a warmth to the space. I also love the starfish just floating in the frame. Have a great day! Thanks for the post!
I just LOVE the door! Beautiful color! I love your whole little Beach Cottage. Your blog has insipred me to make a few changes in my own home. I’m not by the sea, but I want a cleaner, simpler envirnment. Thanks for the inspiration
)
Hi there! I read you all the way from Santa Barbara, love your style and ideas in your home…I saw an old door at Habitat the other day and now I really want to go back and grab it
Oh yes, love the gray door and the chair beside it. Loveliness !!!
The thing that strikes me first is – why is the doorknob so high? (Or so low if you turned it the other way)
I love the whole charming spot you have created, Sarah. You seem to be able to leave things in that perfect state of simplicity. The color is good! I like what Donna said about it looking like the color of cement – so pretty.
I like it. I enjoy moving our stuff around or adding something new to make our house look fresh or just a little different.
I love the grey door. Absolutely charming. And the whole scene is just stunning. Perfection!
I like your grey door, even though I’m not a lover of grey very much, but its a lovely neutral colour in amongst your other lovely neutrals, the striped cushion works perfectly to my eye against it, way cool!! but what really sprung to my attention was the lovely starfish and frame ‘picture’ it really caught my eye.
Every time I hop on your blog I wonder… would she mind if I came and just took a nap in her home? I feel like I’d fall asleep with the softest breeze on my face and dream dreams scented with flowers and the ocean… I feel rested & refreshed just thinking about it. Love the gray – it softens the white, makes it seem comfortable not austere. So pretty!
I do love gray and the door is a pretty gray however I don’t care for the dark stripe in the rug, the dark pillow or the dark empty frame. The gray door, while pretty, reminds me of a gloomy day (and I do like gray!). I think I would have preferred a soft turquoise or soft blue. The gray coupled with the dark striped rug/pillow/frame seems too masculine and not fitting with the whole soft white thing.
On the flip side, if you removed the dark frame, rug and pillow, I might just love that door in the gray color.
I’d almost like to see the words, “a beach cottage” somewhere in that vignette. I am thinking it could be the new header for the blog. Initially, I am thinking about the words, “a beach cottage” in white on the door but it could be done on an old piece of wood that’s been white washed with the words done in gray to match the door, then hung above the starfish, with the starfish moved down where the dark picture frame is located. There are many companies (Words Anywhere) that make words in all different colors and fonts that might work for that.
love the door! you could always hang the frames in the door if you wanted a little less on the wall with the chair next to it.
not a big fan of the rug (in your outakes) I feel like it is a little to small and awkward for that area.
other than that you plac is beautiful.
I am one of your “silent” fans. Your style is my style – white and uncluttered. Thanks you for sharing your home and your life. Sue in Mexico, MO
First of all, I want to say, as always great inspiration to be found on your blog…you pull it off very well!
Second, I have the absolute perfect ladder to go with that door…it was here when we moved into our 50′s town house. You’ve given me an idea for a shelf with the ladder, now I only have to find a place to put it!
How does Mr.BC like the door leaning on the wall? My Mr. MMC probably wouldn’t understand…we are not that far yet, hehe!
Cheers,
Siggie
Lovin’ that junkin’ found door! It’s good to know I’m not the only one with problems hanging photos and art…. I am never happy with the results. I LOVE your starfish idea though… simple and perfect!
I’m one of those blog stalkers you speak of… always reading never commenting. So I thought this would be as good a time as any to come out of hiding.
I love the idea of leaning that door on a wall. So simple and so easy to change. (i am a mind changer too) I also love the color. Our bedroom is a brown/grey color and that door is a very blue/grey that I find very pleasing. Thank you for all the inspiration you bring me everyday. Perhaps, now I’ll comment a little more now that I’m no longer being shy.
I too am one who visits your blog often but hasn’t commented yet. I think your cottage is just lovely and such a beautiful reflection of you! Neutrals are so clean, pretty, and soothing and you can make them work so well together. Personally I love the color green so neutrals with pops of green is my absolute favorite!
Oh and the mirror looks great, a real treasure
Molly
I’ve been lurking for awhile now. I’m a beach person at heart but am stuck in the mountains of New Hampshire for one more year until I retire. Right now, I’m lucky enough to spend my summers near the ocean, at least.
Every morning when I get to school, I click on your site to get a taste of salt air and laid-back decorating.
Thank you for giving me that little escape!
The gray? Kind of somber and shadowy for me but that’s only because I’m surrounded by gray hillsides right now. I need some color!
But that’s my life. In your home I think it’s beautiful!
wow are you ever getting your wish that everyone leaves a comment! cool!
i love the grey. and the rug stripes and dark frame (here comes designer talk) add depth! really a great choice on your part. jkj
Hi Sarah,
As usual you have taken something that others would may#be pass by and turned into a lovely feature in your wonderful home. I am enjoying trying to make my house a home on a budget and love your pictures for inspiration.
Well I love it ….but then I love all your house . Just make sure no one decides to open it or they might end up with a lovely grey door hitting them on the head ! And although I can only see it a little I love the bed under the window.
Grey is my favorite color!! I plan on painting some pieces of furniture for my master bedroom in grey.. this is very inspiring
I love the frame around the starfish such a great idea!
I absolutely LOVE the door! It’s perfect! But I love your whole house! Fortunately for you I live in the US, or I would have tried to sneak in with a suitcase and live there with you!
I do have a question, is it me, or is the knob of that door in an unusual position? (Not close to the middle?) I wonder what it was used for.
I LOVE the grey door and even moreso love that someone else loves having a door lean up against a wall
I have a very light pink one (original color) leaning behind a bookcase so you only really see the top half—love it!
Stunning stunning stunning!!!
Another woman here who regularly reads without commenting although I admire your style. I like the look of the leaning door but I couldn’t manage it in this little cottage in a UK seaside town…the front hallway here is single file only and the rest of the house to match.
Hello Sarah,
I am really looking forward to seeing where you go with your colouring-in mood. I love the grey; it adds some depth and contrast to the room without being too much. And I love the door – I have real functioning ones of the same vintage in my house. The house is falling down, needs restumping and rewiring, but at least I have my lovely doors!
Kathy
Looks great! I would like it slathered in your famous white paint too though! Just saying…Your art is simple and to my tasting. I too prefer not to cover the walls in art or photo’s. And I’m an artist. My parents home is covered in framed pieces I painted in my teens. But it looks messy to me. I like to draw and paint, but don’t want it in my own cottage. Funny, huh? I like a white, simple palette with a starfish or rose here and there. Your look is PeRfeCt!!!
I LOVE the door, Sarah…and would leave it “as is”.
I’m digging it’s current muted gray…so lovely! AND, it looks amazing in your bedroom. Love the new placement.
Smiles,
Rachel
I love that door-actually, love the whole house-it feels serene and welcoming
I love the look, and I don’t think it is much of a departure from what you’ve been doing. The darker colors just accent the white. I’ve loved whites and neutrals for a loooong time now, but have never done a room in them. I look back at decorating books and pics I’ve kept, and most of them are in whites.
Sigh. The white pillow, the striped cushion, the perfect gray beach door. Now these are things that cheer me right up! In my humble opinion, it’s just right. I’m thinking now, maybe beach doors for my headboard? If I do that, I’ll give BC credit because you always inspire me! Such a nice read on a rainy gray day here at the beach in “sunny california”!
xo
love the grey against all the white..
love the simplicity of your photos!
my place is mostly white..i find it looks clean even when it’s not
I LOVE it. The color, the door…the house we are in now has all but one vintage-y doors throughout, so I have a newfound appreciation for them.
By the way, I’m reading about your lemon roast chicken with potatoes while I’m eating a bowl of blue box mac n cheese. Growl. That sounds FABULOUS!
I also love the color of the door. The picture makes it look like it has a touch of blue in it, which I love, as I’m not a real fan of gray without it!
Having never left a comment on any blog I read (and that is a lot) I felt compelled by your so very nice invite to leave my opinion.
I think you have the best blog ever! We just bought a verrrry small place on Tybee Island, GA and you will be my sole inspiration in decorating it! I have enjoyed your diy projects and can’t wait to get started on my own. Keep up the interesting and beautiful ideas. Thanks.
oh, and i love the grey door!
This Grand Old Lady lives again, she is beautiful, and i love the grey, very peaceful.
Amanda
I love the door, the entire composition, really. Love the look of your cottage, too, but I am way too sentimental and have scads of family things about.
The grey frame is a perfect beachy grey – like driftwood that is still a bit wet. Love it. When I walk around my house after looking at your piccys, my eyes hurt a little from the complete chaos of color overload, but I have noticed recently that I’m ‘growing up’ (finally at 40!) and there is a definite lean to neutrals and green. And light blue. With a bit of red. Bugger.
Loving the new look in the bedroom Sarah. Amazing what you can do when you have that white background. The door looks fabulous leaning against the wall like that
Alison
I love the gray and have been trying to figure out a way of incorporating it into my house. Maybe my always neglected master bedroom could be just the place. Thanks for all the great ideas.
hi sarah…I’m definitely a lurker, non-commenter. your blog and my morning coffee, daily
I love the look. not at all modern, gives depth and texture. and the knob on the door is definitely the crowning touch for me!
your colour scheme reminds me of Sibella Court’s “Paperwhites” than anything else. especially with addition of greys, the burlap and the beautiful brown trunk.
but unlike some of the stuff Sibella does, you manage to keep it uncluttered. Your home is gorgeous, welcoming, restful and uniquely your own.
I say, keep following your instincts and doing what feels right for you in your space. from where I sit, it’s all very drool-worthy!
hey laurel, what a lovely comment, thanks so much, I love that knob too and its sure getting a lot of attention
hmm I think the same about Sibella, not seen much but up my alley for sure!
best sarahx
oh I love the door, love the grey. I am the same way about art… I decorate with photos more than anything else.
I agree… dump the Dell and get a Mac ;o
Michelle
I have to say I visit your blog often but never comment. So here goes….I LOVE your style, the whites, the neutrals, the vintage finds, a little bit of paint, imagination, creativity….you do it all so well!! I’d like a beach cottage of my own. I love the old door in grey, but I’m also seeing it in a beautiful faded, chipped turquoise or maybe a soft shade of blue with more muted shades in the stripe cushion. But really, whatever you do is beautiful and I can’t wait to see rest of the bedroom.
The grey touches are flippin’ awesome. That door? Drool. There’s one on craiglist in my area for $15 that is tempting me to NO END. But I’m on a spending freeze right now. Shouldn’t even visit Craig while the wallet is on sabatical
Sorry to hear the Dell Devils won’t make good.
I LOVE the door! I also love the way you used it against the wall with the frames on the other side. I did a post last week about how NOT to use cookie cutter store art. Personalize a space to make it your own. It makes it so much more interesting. Says so much of the person. I think that is one of many reasons I adore to stop by your blog, Sarah!
HUGs, my Aussie friend!
Leigh
I love vintage doors. Your blog is always inspirational for me, thanks for keeping with it.
Hello Sarah, I cant wait to check in everyday with you and today it seems like you where reading my mind with the grey and Ikea talk.I too have stepped into the grey colors, I think it is the new sophisticated nuetral.I love the door color and the whole wall, thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas with us everyday.
I live about 5 miles from the Dell headquarters. Do I need to go down and handle things for you? LOL I will, after all, be driving past it tomorrow on my way to the gym.
Well, I wondered what color you would be adding, but as I really started paying attention…new it would be gray or taupe. I painted my first piece of furniture this weekend…white. It is a vintage mirror with lots of carving across the top. I also antiqued it and it looks smashing. Anyway your gray door looks right at home in your bedroom…so you with your decorating style. Have a great week!
I am one who visits daily, and does not comment. So, here I am, one of my first times. I LOVE keeping up with all your daily journeys, and you have inspired me in many ways! LOVE the new door, it is art that speaks to my heart! Can’t wait to see your beading!
Hi Sarah!
You know, I always imagined my someday-house being a mix of whites and neutrals with a little bit of muted turquoise (because my love for turquoise knows no bounds). But the gray door is making me honestly crave gray! I love it!
And listen to this! I’ve been reading your Dell woes and staring at the Dell logo on my computer thinking “Dang. Thank god nothing has happened to *my* computer!”
So what happens to day? One of the fans in the tower starts going crazy on me. It sounds like a swarm of drunken bees are having a book club in there right now! It is DRIVING ME NUTS.
I think it looks lovely!
I love the door! The colour is gorgeous – I’ve been leaning towards the grey and greige (grey beige) for a while now. It’s a bit of colour without going over board!
I have a GIANT mirror leaning against the wall in my tiny living room – some people get it and others don’t. Oh well. It makes me happy.
I finished rearranging my room too – moving onto the dining room next. Lol my house is so small it’s like a little doll’s house so always fun changing things around.
Jo xx
I think the door looks great and it has inspired me to do a makeover in our A Mart (furniture) office. My husband is a builder and while we work from home I still want our office to reflect who we are and what we do – what better way than to use old building architecture? Thanks for the inspiration. I LOVE your blog!
The grey gets both of my thumbs up! I really like it. Love the empty frames too! I can see why this makes you very happy, it makes me happy too all across the world.
i love the grey, it looks wonderful with the walls and the white
i also love that the doorknob is so high. why IS the doorknob so high?
I think the gray tone is a little industrial looking. Maybe a couple of shades lighter or a touch more blue in it. I’d love to get my hands on that doorknob – just to see what the original metal looks like!
Hi Sarah,
I always comment on your beautiful cottage but its always to family and friends. Your comments tonight made me realise that its important for me to let you know how much I love what you do and to tell you that you inspire me to make my home more beautiful, encourage me to let it be an expression of who I am and whats important to me.
So I say thanks a million, zillion for that Sarah.
Regards,
Theresa.
(p.s don’t know if million zillion is correct english but thought you would understand completely)
I’ve never commented before, but I LOVE your blog; you are constantly inspiring me! I really do love the gray. It looks cozy. It makes your room feel cozy. What a great feeling for your bedroom.
Gorgeous…LOVE the door, LOVE the colour. Come to your blog all the time (have never left a comment), always leave inspired. Everytime I look at my kidney bean tin can with white flowers in it, I think of your lovely home!! Thank you for sharing your passion with us
I loved this post. I understand wanting to re-arrange furniture to re-create a rooms feel. I have been doing that since my childhood. And my Mother loved it!
I love the grey door. I think the grey adds a subtle punch (and the black stripes too). It works and looks lovely.
I’m a fan of the door colour. In fact, I painted several pieces in my studio in a similar NZ equivilant shade.
I drop by every so often to see how you’re doing in your new adopted country. Always a pleasure to read your blog. We have similar taste in decor but instead of using doors (although I do have an old battered tongue and groove one on display), I tend to use old shabby window frames on the wall and hang hand crafted art within them. Must do a blog post about it!
I’m a colour lover so your addition of the muted gray is a good move, I think. I love the all-white look, but, even if I did a room up that way, I know it would be a matter of hours before I started adding splashes of vivid colour…I can’t help myself!
Your place is the bomb, Sarah. I love it!
Such a gorgeous door! I admit to fancying that soft muted gray color right now, even in my wardrobe! Your home is just lovely and so soothing.
Blessings,
I love visiting your blog, though Ive never commented before. I couldn’t resist your kind invitation! I love the door – love your cottage!
I think Sarah that what I wanted to say has already been said by all those before me – so ditto. You know I love what you do with the beach cottage.
LOVE the color of the door! Really glad you did the blue gray instead of the white that it was. It really makes it pop!
I also agree with you on the tulip canvas. I too have looked at that canvas many times at Ikea, but never quite know what I would do with it. To me it looked too contrived in the straight on picture of your sofa. Glad you rethought it! Looking forward to what you will replace it with!
Love the starfish in the frame..and I would LOVE to see the starfish and frame and the dark gray frame ON the door…LOL…just the Libra balanced eeegit in me.
hmmm – I think that design (not to mention colour) is a very personal thing, so I hope you wont mind if I say that I don’t actually like it. (sorry!) I don’t know what it is that I don’t like, but when I saw that first photo, my gut reaction, was “ick” – but it seems as though I am in the minority – everyone else likes it.
(I hope we can still be friends though!)
