Hey girls!
Just popping in to show you what I've been up to these last few days as another week seems to fly by at the Beach Cottage.
I am painting, I am slap bang in the middle of a painting fest.
I have the pie cabinet, a bookcase and the unit I showed you the other day all in various stages of being enveloped in the new hand-mixed beachy white…
I took a snap along the way of the pie cabinet (before shot is here if you wanna look) just so you could see the new trademarked
Beach Cottage colour, though it is subtle for sure, I am really liking it…and though I prefer the look of matt white emulsion paint, for the purposes of this here cottage and the crew that lives in it, nowadays, I paint most things in a semi-gloss oil-based enamel…saves the Beach Cottage Witch coming out when she can't get grubby finger marks off…
It is really quite hard to show you the colour I had mixed to match up an old piece of vintage linen, you can see it is just a tad warmer than pure brilliant white, it actually had a grey feel to it in the tin (and on the linen) which doesn't seem to be coming out in the painting…I added the shell ball which is white white to try and show you the subtle difference, but it didn't really work…
I had plans of using brushed steel or even shiny chrome-ish pulls on this one but as this is near completion I think I am going to go with the pulls that were already on there when I came across it as they've aged some, a bit rusty and give a nice contrast to the errrm…white.
What do you think?
Yep I want your input again girlies.
I think chrome ones might modern-it-up-too-much but then again I love that whole vintage/modern thang baby….I might just get some anyway, I'm sure I'll find a use for them…
Anyhoo I gotta rock, I have a lot on my plate with those Beach Cottage Kiddos at the mo' so I'll catch ya later.
*Don't forget Coastal Living Giveaway runs til Friday & this post counts!
glad the dudes
went down well…don't worry I've got more where they came from…

(you can find how this whole new colour thing started here with the vintage grey door)

Nope, I can’t see the color change, but I’ll take your word for it. I’d personally go for the old handles, they look fab. But then again what do I know, you are the queen of vintagy white makeovers.
Wow the pie safe is amazing – what a find. I vote the original handles. I like mixing modern and traditional too but the original handles would look perfect with that piece:)
I am curious as to what the new handles would be….and love the originals too..
So that said – I’m really on the fence!
I can see the difference with the shades of white and I like the it when you’ve got those sort of subtle variations happening.
Gorgeous pie safe by the way. That is some seriously good storage that this old house here needs! What do you think you’ll put in it?
Thanx as always for all your fab stories your a great writer….in my opinion
~Justine~
I’d go with the ones you’ve got – they’re cute and a bit battered, which suits the look!
The cabinet is looking good. I like the old handles jus the way they are.
xx
Looks fabulous – definitely leave the old handles on it – love them
Alison
I’m thinking the original handles would be best.
As you know, this piece is my favorite of all your finds! The creamy white is a great color. I’m thinking that the original hardware is the way to go. No harm trying something else though. Is that tin on the doors????
Sarah, Gotta say I love the original pulls, however I am sure you will come up with some lovely new ones to make the decision even harder! Love th hint of “grey” on the pie safe.
You are FAST!
If I didn’t spend so much time peering into other people’s lives and projects, I’d get things done around here too!
My vote for this piece in particular–go with the original pulls—whatever you do, you’ll be happy and it will look great.

Ahhh, the perfect shade of white has been found.
I love the old pulls.
So loving the pie safe!! I totally agree that the chrome or brushed hardware would add a modern flare to this piece and I would rather see something else. What if you painted the existing rusted hardware the french gray or taupe color you have used recently and then distressed the hardware so some of the ORB/rust finish shows through? I think that would soften the look and tie it in with your other colors as well! Just a thought! Have a great day!
With all the vintage in your cottage…the original pulls would fit right in. Lovely.
Looks great! I’m also addicted to painting my existing furniture. For me its Farrow and Ball’s new white.
Have you considered glass and metal pulls? The metal will give the aged look you want to keep but the glass will glam it up a bit. Along the lines of the door knobs from Anthropoligie here

Your Vintage Linen white is gorgeous! It makes it look bathed in sunlight – adding a depth and warmth to your wonderful pie safe. I want some!! lol I definitely vote for original handles and pulls. If you don’t like the rustiness perhaps you could repaint them with rustoleum paint like for antiqued brass or their textured black which looks like wrought iron. A little distressing and they’d look good as old!
I love the original handles as well. I’d leave them as is. Love it!
hey sarah, I say leave the old pulls on and dry brush them with some white to tone them down a bit. lovely.
The ‘colour’ looks great and put the original handles back on! Fabulous cabinet and it looks really nice inside.
It looks fantastic Sarah.I would buy new handles and try them on,but personally I think the olds ones have character.Joanne
I love the pie safe, of course, what don’t I love from your house? Please, keep the old pulls, love, love the contrast between the clean white and the dark pulls. I’ve let my Coastal Living subscription lapse after so many years, getting one from you would be loverly. You are a gem, Sarah.
I just found you blog and I love it!! I am going to be moving into a “beach cottage/shack” in a matter of months. I will be painting and re-decorating the rooms and have been looking for some inspiration, Your site has definitely given me some! Looking forward to checking it out more….and seeing what more you do.
everytime I come here… I feel so relaxed… love the old pulls
Go with the original – chrome would be too harsh.
Sarah…the pie safe turned out fabulous!! If you count my vote keep the original handle pulls. I think they’ll add a little extra to the piece.
You did good girlfriend!! Can you bottle up some of that energy and inspiration you have and send it on over to me. I sure could use a gi-normous dose!! Have a fabulous Friday dear friend.

Hi Sarah,
how do you get so lucky finding such amazing stuff.
looks great, you are just so clever!!!
Take care,
Theresa Little South Aussie
Creamy, luscious shade of white! You really made that old pie safe perfect.

what a lovely transformation!
I like those drawer pulls, but not the original door knobs so much. Myself, I think I’d use paint the curlicue backplates white and leave the knobs dark, or find a pair of plainer vintage black knobs.
