Flying in with a quick Saturday visit here this Arvo at the Beach Cottage cos I thought you might like to see how my morning went
…and just why I love the Lucky Country they call Australia…
I was sitting on the beach, watching the kids in the surf, people watching
when this sailed on by…
on our way to the beach we did a bit of treasure hunting and found these weathered old oars
quite what shall I do with them??

I better go start the Spanish Stew and get this old cottage ship shape

Old oars look absolutely wonderful on the wall, particularly above a doorway. When I was young we had a cottage on the beach at Palm Beach. There were a pair of oars (one above the other, head to toe) above the living room door. They looked absolutely fabulous and I have always wanted to do it again but never found the oars. Lucky girl!!!

Beautiful sail boat..I had to check my wn photo because I thought we had captured the same vessel…but mine was a white body..similar style tho! LOL

Well Sarah, I for one have ‘oar’ envy. Having just priced them at a local antique shop for $70 each, I think you have scored a real bargain there.

hi sarah- my folks had a beach shack at ‘coasters retreat’- you’d know it as on the palm beach ferry run- the stop before the basin- and my bower bird dad collected many an oar from the fisherman over there…he had a gorgeous display on the wall near the kitchen{it was open plan so just a corner of the shack really} so looked slightly odered like a kitchen but still totally shabby. In fact you must get off and have a walk along casters and then cross to the basin by foot when low tied if you havent already- its still old and sleepy- kids love it don’t they -carrying picnic baskets through knee deep water- an adventure!
looking forward to seeing them up somewhere- you can never have too many oars!

What a find! We bought an oar and used it as a handrail going up the stairs – it looked fab, but unfortunately the buyers thought so too, so we had to leave it behind. You’re v jammy finding a pair, but they couldn’t go to a better home!

I have an old oar that I got last summer. Still haven’t hung it up, but it’s on my plan someday.

Guess what, we finally had sun yesterday and today over here as well. I’ve been having so much energy these days, my seasonal affective disorder is officially over, haha! I even wore a dress today and I did not have to unfreeze my legs when I got home. It is almost too good to be true

Beautiful view of the sailboat on the ocean. I posted a photo of our view around here right now, but nothing like yours. I grew up by the ocean and I miss those wonderful views. Thanks so much for sharing them.
I picture those oars on a wall somewhere (maybe your deck?) and maybe even a beachy phrase/word or two added. I’m sure whatever you come up with will be wonderful.

Oh to be aboard that sailboat…ah,lovely…and those oars will look just great tucked into your lovely beach cottage – I will be curious to see if they remain as is or if some sort of paint treatment awaits them!
Paint them a stunning color – I’m thinking parrot green or a slate blue and hang them on the wall. Or put some gloss poly on them to show up the grain and hang them on the wall. Or stencil some words on them.

Maybe a late reply. but I just found your blog since I would like old oars for my own beachhouse.
Don`t paint them! Just hang them on the wall, over a window is nice, or over a maritime painting or photo.
They can also be used as a handrail if you mount them to a bracket.
