A Beach Cottage Coastal Decorating ~ Tables with Pom-Poms

Hey good looking, whatya got cooking?  How about making BC pom-poms with me?

C’mon in today, take a deep old breath and indulge me in some white-porn…you know you wanna…

I dunno about you but I have been bombarded for what seems like a long time with tissue paper pom-poms, if that’s what we’re calling them.  All three of the shops I frequent like some deluded window-shopper have recently had them in their windows, blogs I follow, my fave English magazine and even the surfy shop whose window dresser tickles my fancy with her style recently had them in a multitude of Spring colours hanging in the window.

So here’s my version, the Beach Cottage take on this phenomenon sweeping interiors

….tho’ I didn’t intend on making them at all…

I actually wanted flowers for the table but when I stopped at the flower market on the way home from the deli I was most disappointed in the offering…lame bunches of straggly looking things and the only nice ones that even hit anywhere near the mark for what I wanted were, bottom-line, way too exxie.   Just call me thrifty. 

So I arrived home flowerless and with a table that looked very sad and underdressed. 

My first port of call of course was the garden, but there was not a sausage out there that would do…too few snowdrops, camelias on their last legs and about a million daffs and tulips bursting from the ground but not quite yet out.

So I decided I might make my own ‘flowers’ with tissue and set about making these little pom pom delights like I’ve seen everywhere, not knowing quite how they’d turn out…

These are nothing more, really, than a BC inspired take on those spheres of crinkly delight you made at school.  Though the end result on here I think turned out a whole lot better than the ones that I churned out as an 8 yr old. 

I went for cheap-as-chips tissue paper here…from the dollar store at $2 a pack and for this little lot used about half the pack…I don’t deny that better quality stuff may move one into a different, more superior world of pom-poms.  I won’t be finding out.

As I folded and concertinered (pls no grammar emails) to my hearts delight on the back deck in the arvo sun I was taken aback to our wedding…

It was for sure a modest affair…no fireworks and fancy hotels…and the function room was in need of some dressing….and we did most of it ourselves…and so for the months before I found myself making flowers out of pale pink ribbon…a tonne of flowers…black sacks of pink flowers seemed to seep out from all corners…and we curled and folded and tied until we thought that we could no more

But somehow, that kinda repetitive activity is soothing

And tho’ for sure I am never gonna be a craft queen these are oh-so-simple and yet up there in the realms of to-die-for special.  A winning combination if you ask me from a dollar store purchase.

 The funny things is there was mucho interest from the Beach Cottage Kiddos in this one…they had been out at sport while I was happily sitting quietly making these and when they arrived home this vision in white was already dressed and I was floating around in tablescaping heaven..Miss BC and my little stylist ooohed and ahhhed and picked them up and examined. 

Assuming that I had bought them they asked me where I’d got them…I made them said I, positively reveling in my craftiness.  Really?!!!  How??  Errm yep, don’t tell me you guys have missed out on a really important part of education while you’ve been learning how to add x to y…ya mean you don’t know how to make a pom-pom? 

And so ensued a pom-pom making extravaganza.  You want a pom-pom baby.  Mrs BC can now provide you with one.  In a myriad of colours. 

 The rest of the table is pretty simple too (& find more tables dressed up here at Susan’s)….and I have to tell you I loved this one…it looked so good in real life…hence the amount of photos…I couldn’t bear to leave any out.

I started off with a vintage sheet for the tablecloth…thrifted of course, can’t remember where…I love the details on these old things and wanted that to show….topped it with the infamous BC Stripe (will be in my store soon) and simply plopped the balls of frothy white heaven on top of the settings. 

Oh and while we are talking all things crafty I made the lovehearts, tied them with butchers twine around some re-cycled jam jars…

 So I guess that’s it from me this lovely morning here Down Under…we are hitting much warmer temps and I am going out on my new bike (ooh goodness I lurve it) and taking utmost pleasure in getting my mitts in the earth and doing some gardening..
