What I Wore $10 Skinny Jeans ~ Fashion Friday on Tuesday for Real Girls + GIVEAWAY

G’day.

Yes this is a post about skinny jeans.

$10 skinny jeans.

Amazing $10 skinny jeans that work with all those bits and pieces that don’t work…

When skinny jeans first came into fashion I thought they couldn’t be more ridiculous, they made me shudder from head to foot…I mean surely some deranged fashion expert somewhere just did it on a whim when they were looking back at pictures of drainpipe jeans one day?

I would stick, happily, with my straight leg, pull in and hold it there Mavi’s thank you very much.

I watched from afar as girls about half my age, tried and failed to carry them off.  I saw some real hideous sights in skinny jeans…And I came to the conclusion after not very long that me + the skinny jean = ain’t happening.
kmart jeansBut, I did like a few things about them…I loved the ankle line with sandals and even more with ballet flats and I liked how they work nicely with a big flowing top or shirt…
And so I started to hunt for some….not my best move…first off the pyschological barriers one must overcome when trying these babies on…I have found I need at least one or even two sizes bigger than my size and I have found this item of clothing pretty unforgiving on certain areas…trying these on is worse than normal jeans shopping for a girl of my age, you need an iron will and a duck’s back…Then, the Beach Cottage Facebook girlsgot talking and the lovely Michelle, told us all of her latest find…a pair of jeans for $10 no less, that were skinny, fit well and looked great.Yeah, well I didn’t really believe her, I mean they might look good on her, but after laying on changing room floor moments with skinnies, I thought there was no way a jean that cost $10 was gonna be mine.

Michelle is a make-up artist (you can find her website here - yes I am still waiting for her to ask me if I’d like a makeover ;-) & her Facebook page with behind the scenes of a make-up artist in Sydney here ) and had been told the $10 jean secret by a model on one of her shoots…hmmm, warning bells ringing for you?  Yep indeedy.

But, gotta say, I’d trust those Beach Cottage Facebook girls with my life and so I got myself a pair of those skinnies…in fact I didn’t even try them on, I was in a real rush and don’t get to this store very often, so it was one of those situations where you have no time for deliberation….I plumped for the size bigger than I normally buy in jeans, having the experience of trying on skinnies in my normal size and feeling deflated.

I slung them in the back of the car, carried on my sport-pick-up taxi driving duties, brought them home and didn’t think much more about them.

The next day, I tried them on…

OMG!

beach cottage skinnies

These are good…the cut across the thighs is good (this is where jeans often let me down), the width of the ankle and calf is purrrfect – not too skinny or tight & straight + flattering and  the bottom area is not baggy and saggy and there is not too much extra fabric at the top of the leg, but not so tight that it sorta sticks to all those things you don’t want it to stick to…

beach cottage sarah jeansThe denim in these is not as substantial or hardworking of that of say a Mavi jean and so I don’t think I would be wearing these without a long top or cardigan…but if you are looking for a very comfortable, very budget-friendly solution to the tuck-the-jeans-in-a-boot or the flattering-ankle-with-a-sandal or the forty-is-the-new-thirty-skinny-modern-jean-look-for-real-girls, then I think this could be a great little, ever-so-easy addition to your wardrobe…

and being the fashion expert that I am ;-) I don’t think size matters here, these work for the issues…bums, thighs, tops of leg and so whatever size you are, especially if you wear them with a longer top, it’s the cut through the ankle, calf, knee an going up to the thigh that makes these rock

The best thing about these for me has been that because they err on the side of legging (please do not even think of the word jegging here, that is the worst fashion item I think I have seen ever) they are comfortable…you can throw ‘em on, stick a long top on, plop on your sunnies and ballets and you are so good to go…

i am a blue jean / white t-shirt gal. love my t’s in long sleeves mostly. throw on red patent leather heels w/ a little red clutch , simple silver jewelry & i’m out the door !!

    i wish i could say i wear your tiny size, but i’m a size 14 : ))
    thank you sarah !!

  3. Kristen says:

Well, for ten bucks, I may just take the skinny jeans plunge! They’ve always given me the sense that my legs look triangular…but I’m willing to have my mind changed. Yours look fab–I’m off to Kmart! :)

  4. sally says:

Sarah….I absolutely love wereing my favorite pair of jeeans with my favorite white te. I layer on some of my fun pieces of jewelry and I am ready to go! Can I mention that you always look so fan-tab-u-lous my friend! I have two favorite pairs of shoes, so as not to hurt their feelings I can’t possibly choose between the them. Love your give away sweet sister! Would love to win! Thank you for your generousity as always. You treat your bloggers so delightfully!!!

I have heard talk of these $10 wonders…. now will have to investigate for myself. Fav way to wear my jeans – with my clog wedges or stuffed into my hunters!

  6. Bec says:

I have not heard of this wonder and am planning a trip to Kmart today. My jean wearing is simple, classic – white tee, ballet flats, leather tote and scarf and I am good to go.

Thanks for the inspiration – my wardrobe is so dictated by you at the moment – I have the combats, and all things stripey :)

  7. Gretel says:

And while you’re all heading to kmart, I got the Garnier miracle cream on sale there the other day for $8.50! #lovingkmartallofasudden

  8. carolyn says:

Oh boo, we don’t have Kmart here anymore. I have had luck with skinnies though (and I am in the over 40, everything not where is should be anymore set) that I bought at Old Navy. They aren’t perfect, as the waist sags out a bit, but they are great through the leg and I always wear something long on top anyway.

  9. Jacquie says:

Thanks for putting into words everything I’ve thought about the skinny jean trend. (As a 39 year young mum) Bought my first pair to wear with a pair of riding style boots but hadn’t found a pair that looked flattering enough with my ballet flats.

So I wear my dark, straight leg jeans, a la Ines de la Fressange with a man style belt and watch, a great t shirt or boat neck (white, black or stripes), flat shoes (ballet or converse slip ons) and topped off with a fitted blazer or trench or military style jacket (have found some fabulous ones at the op shop!).

Now you’ve inspired me, I’m off to Kmart today!

  10. BiLLY says:

    Looking good Sarah,

How about this for a look….Jeans with cowboy boots, a white t-shirt, fabulous belt accessories galore….Yeehah!!

Ok, So the next question is…where did you get the cute sandals??

    BiLLY x

  11. Nicola says:

Jeans are my staple bottom half and get worn with everything. I have this great white crochet top which any coloured cami can be worn underneath. Teamed up with some dinosaur design bracelets (my fav thing at the moment) and some strappy flat sandals.

  12. Anonymous says:

Oooooh yeah!!! They look great! Gonna hot foot me down to kmart after the morning school run ;) I also love the ankle line with sandles….. They are just what I am looking for. Thanks for sharing Sarah :) x

  13. Hey! These look awesome on you! Great scarf too! I got that one in blue. Beautiful. And you know I’ll do your make up anytime you want! Infact, if you want to get a few of your girlfriends and a bottle of wine together, I’ll come and give you all a lesson!

    x

  14. jan says:

you look so cute and school-girlish in those skinny jeans ! never would have guessed you had 3 kiddo’s if i hadn’t been reading your blog for awhile. i am shaped like a tazmanian devil, you know kind of an inverted triangle. i love skinny jeans with a simple t-shirt, cami, or tank top with a light floaty shirt over them so it doesn’t add bulk. i’m older than you but feel i can still show my best asset still (not that silly) my *legs* with bright red toenails and sandals when the weather allows and ballet flats when it’s colder. toss my hair in a tail with a ruffled hair tie and call it good to go for the day. you are so cute and never cease to amaze me at what new and interesting things you come up with. read back awhile ago about the snake ( reading archives ) late at night in bed. i burst out laughing out loud. probably could have woke the dead with that la thanks for the giggles…you always make my day.

  15. Kari says:

My favorite way to wear my jeans is with a baggy t-shirt, preferably a vintage shirt from my youth that sports my soccer number, and of course my flip-flops. Sounds kinda frumpy, but with cute jeans, cute toe nail polish and my lip gloss on, I think I actually pull it off. So about Kmart. I live in the states, and I actually put my kids to bed tonight then ran off to Kmart. I couldn’t find them!! SO DISAPPOINTED! I’m in another country, so I guess I should have considered that they don’t carry all the same stuff. Maybe I’ll be able to find them on the website. Do you know the designer name? I was guessing Bongo or Route 66, but I honestly looked through them all. Let us know. Thanks!

  16. j says:

i actually love how your blue shirt looks with the jeans. where did you buy it?? thanks..

  17. Kat says:

I really must get my act together and go try on a pair of these!!!
    $10 is a bargain!

  18. Di Nash says:

Hey girls, I’m 57 and wear my skinny jeans with pride. I think if you’ve got an ok body they look fine. Mine are high waisted (gotta love that and of course no-one sees that bit) and they look great with ballet flats or sandals as Sarah says. As long as you look elegant, you can wear ‘younger’ fashions.
Thanks Sarah, gotta love KMart. xx

  19. Kat says:

Forgot to add my fav way to wear jeans.
Mostly tucked into my new boots, a nice top, long-ish cardigan and add some jewellery or a scarf.
Now it is heading for summer, ballet flats or sandals and a bright coloured tank.

  20. the freckled minx says:

Thanks heaps – I am going to go and try these babies. I love to shop but hate hate hate shopping for jeans as it’s always such a trial to find a good fitting pair. I have a big ba-toot-ie so like to wear my shirts out and over my jeans winter and summer.

  21. Blue jeans and a white shirt (mostly tshirts) is my UNIFORM :) …..favorite outfit EVER! and yes, I have a fear of the skinny jean…..

  22. Rose says:

Ah…….finally an item that is avail here in Aus not in states…. As for brand these are kmart’s own generic brand (maybe called NOW). In Australia K-mart has recently changed stocking their own cheap lines and pretty much not stocking anything else. Have actually been really unhappy with the change as when I walk into the store I am greeted with a cheap plastic smell especially in shoe aisle…but those skinny jeans are calling me……may have brave K-Mart again

  23. Lynn says:

Went to Kmart in the State last night and could not find your skinny jeans. Could you let us know what brand they are? Thanks.

  24. JennJenn says:

i must head to kmart to check these out..i found a pair of skinny stretch cords today at tj maxx for $10, on clearance! taking the plunge!…

my favorite way to wear jeans is with no shirt or shoes, especially when the mr. is around… but hey, that only works at home in very warm weather. sooo, the close runner-up would be rolled way up, with my converse all-star bright yellow rain boots with their cuffs covered in stars. & oh yeah, a nice sweater b/c it is cold & rainy here these days!

  25. kathy h. says:

Don’t know if it’s too late for this but I’m going to give it a go. My favorite way to wear these skinnies is with my old reliable flip flogs and a t-shirt. I had a baby a year ago at age 44, and I am struggling with the weight. I could eat less, but that would be too easy. Anyway, I have been feeling VERY matronly lately so this would be nice.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  26. alison says:

You have inspired me to revisit jeans Sarah. I have lost my jeans confidence the last couple of years. Thanks for the product review.

  28. Vicky says:

don’t you love it when you find a bargain! and a flattering bargain at that!!

I love my skinnys. I have two pairs, red and denim, and wear them with boots when its cold, and flats when its not. They would have to be a wardrobe staple!

You can read about my red ones here http://vicky-lifeonthehill.blogspot.com/2011/08/style-on-budget.html – the vest I have on with them is 15 years old… :D

  29. laura says:

You are rocking the skinny jeans! They look like they are a cross between straight leg and skinnies…… v. nice.

  30. Rita says:

Went to Kmart today looking for the jeans. Looked thru the whole store for skinny jeans. They had so many brands as well as several house brands. What does it say on the inside label or tag? Any more info would greatly help. I’m going by again on Tuesday.
The link you have does not show jeans. Thank you for helping us all!

  • Beach Cottage Too Easy Goat’s Cheese, Lentil & Herb Summer Salad

Beach Cottage Too Easy Goat's Cheese, Lentil & Herb Summer Salad

G'day ladies, let's have a Too Easy Beach Cottage recipe yeah?  The original place for Too Easy Recipes on the web ;-) So, after my last salad went down a storm in my inbox, that's here if you missed it, I had to do this one seeing as I make it most weeks.       There is a problem with this salad and kiddos though...it looks, well, it looks, kinda yucky...but once they try it, they'll ask if and when they are next having it....at least that's what happens in this ratty old cottage...but I must interject here that my kiddos are 'good eaters'? ...they didn't get a choice in that ;-) Now, stop, don't start running and hitting that next on your blog reading list, pulses are your best friend in the Too Easy Dump & Go kitchen for the busy mum, or busy anyone for that matter...that reminds me I must blog the garlic canneloni Go To for when you forgot to do dinner, feel like a bath but have three ravenous young Beach Cottage Kiddos on your hands...another day.         I am almost embarrassed to tell you how easy this is, we have it so much that I always have a couple, make that six, cans of lentils around and a jar of goat's cheese in the fridge...the great thing about this is that it's all too easy to get ready in just a few minutes, but it looks, tastes and seems like you did oh so very much more than that. You can obviously too change it up a bit depending on what you have to hand in your kitchen, and I must say that is how I settled on this version...because one day when I made it I didn't have enough Parsley in the garden and so I chucked in some basil too, and liked the Summer feel it added. I think of this as being a rather posh salad, not sure why, because it couldn't really be further from the truth...the great thing is that it works so well for an average run of the mill day, (when I did this for this blog post, it was a hot Sydney Sunday and I did it just simply to go with Rosemary & Garlic stuffed pork, you can see that pork here), ...but just as easily it works on a regular old Wednesday night when you have lost all enthusiasm for rustling up yet another meal, or indeed on Saturday night, when your friends are on their way over for dinner and you my friend, are in your new vintage inspired clawfoot bathtub (that's me in a few weeks time, k?) without any clothes on, a tipple and no idea what to cook for dinner... I have a complicated and ever-changing relationship with goat's cheese...it never fails me in its performance and it never fails to impress me (you can find out a bit more on what I like in food here if you like) and I kinda collect it...because it's very easy to collect and has a fairly long fridge-life, I love trying out different ones and there's not many things I love more than goat's cheese on sourdough...but I think the best thing about it is not thinking about it exclusively in the toast/salad department...I've stuffed it in chicken and all sorts of things as a last minute and it's been fab.     But let's get down to the nitty gritty of this super salad that makes you look like an angel who has been on her knees all day scrubbing the front step when really you are in the digital world and spent most of ...

  • Beach Cottage Too Easy Recipe – Layered Raspberry, Cream & Cake Dessert

Beach Cottage Too Easy Recipe - Layered Raspberry, Cream & Cake Dessert

G'day Beach Cottage ladies, howdy, howdy howdy today for a Beach Cottage Too Easy recipe. If you like cake, cream, sugar and chocolate, make this. This is, rather than a recipe, a putting it together...as you know I am no dessert maker, but, I do make quite a few sweet things, because, somehow I have ended up with kiddos, who in their roles as offspring, believe that part of the deal, is that not only do I feed them a home-cooked meal with a few homegrown ingredients in there, yes, they also believe that dessert and not the kind that comes out of a packet is included too in this All-Inclusive Deal they call Parenthood.   So, this, for sure, is no culinary masterpiece, but if you are looking for something that is so very easy, dump-able, uses everyday ingredients and at the same time makes you look like you spent hours pulling things together plus tastes good....well, then this is for you. Best though, you don't make this for yourself, if you have spent the most part of your week sitting on your derriere reading blogs...this my friend ain't low in the calories department...if, however, you are treating yourself to a delight in a mason jar, this is so for you. I first had a version of this when at dinner back in Old Blighty with a girl, I once, in another life, caught the train up from our village to London with...she was a funny thing really...I am not quite sure how we got on...she was kinda prissy and a bit bothered by too much...I would run to the train flustered, having got up late, and she would have a spreadsheet on the train times, if you know what I mean. Anyway, a few years later when we both had bambinos, I bumped into her again and we met up for playdates and dinner sometimes....this particular night, after a lovely meal she served up little bowls of creamy, cakey fruity stuff topped off with chocolate flake...it was delicious! She didn't serve hers in little jars like this, hers were in a champagne glass and not quite so layered as these ones, plus she used tinned fruit not fresh or frozen.     Years later when said offspring kept requesting dessert, one day I wangled together somehow these from what was around in the fridge and they've been with us ever since. Most likely, if you ever come here for dinner, and shock horror, you dont' bring the dessert with you, this, if you are lucky, will be what you will get. Throw it all together, sprinkle a lil bit of chocolate on the top and the blog reading past-time you so rudely left in order to make this, is my friend, your oyster.   Beach Cottage Too Easy Layered Raspberry, Cream & Sponge Dessert   1 small maderia or butter cake or a pack of cupcakes (or of course make your own) 1/2 cup whipping cream 1/2 cup cream cheese 1/4 cup sugar 8 tbsp fruit 1 x chocolate Flake or chocolate bar for grating      1. beat the cream cheese  until it is soft 2.  whip the cream until soft peaks form 3. combine & add the sugar through 4. cut your cake into portions & layer into the bottom of your jar 5. add a tablespoon of fruit   6. layer on top the cream combo   7. repeat 8. grate chocolate or Flake on top   *Beach Cottage Recipe Notes : this is just a guide really, you can use any cream that you have on hand...I have made this with clotted cream (don't even go there unless you want to seriously get these babies on your thighs), with double cream and I have even, in desperate times squirted in that, ...

  • Beach Cottage Real Girl Blog Tips 5 Blog Essentials

Beach Cottage Real Girl Blog Tips 5 Blog Essentials

G'day Beach Cottage ladies, well I thought it was time for some blogging tips here today, alongside a few nice flowers and shells ;-)  I was recently part of a blogger discussion group over at Kidspot and a couple of hours later had a few questions from girls who couldn't make it to the live chat, one was on my Facebook page and one via email, the Facebook one I will deal with in another Real Girl Blogging Tips post...the email one asked me what essentials do I think every blog needs? Well I have been around here for a while now doing the blogging thing, so I should know this, yeah and I mused this on my walk by the sea this morning I thought well what do you only need? ...I think it is really very easy when blogging, whether or not you are blogging up there in the lofty heights of the Super Bloggers or you are just dipping your toe in the water, to get side-tracked by 101 million different things that are 'essential' to your blog and if you are someone like me who actually gets a thrill from reading blogging tips then you are in an even worse place because you will find yourself literally buzzing with these essential things to add/do/implement on your blog.   However, walking along, gulping down that brisk sea air today (no sunshine & clouds) I thought you actually don't need any of that professional blogging stuff to be successful...but there are a few things that are pretty much crucial ...and once I started to think about it I got it down to about 5 - these are the only things that you need to concentrate on...once you have read through take a look at some of the big girl's blogs...you'll see that actually they don't have bundles of stuff on their blogs...but they do have all of these... So here are my top things that your blog must have     1. About Page There are all sorts of About Pages out there, and if you search on it there are many different tips and ideas for what to have on yours Whatever blogging platform you use, adding an About Me Page is easy, quick and simple and will do everything to grow your blog. I like a long-ish About Page, I am inherently nosy and I like to know a bit more about the person but at the least you should have on it your name and where you are located.  I also think a photo is good too...over the last year or so I think this has become more important in blogging - if you are hesitant about that as I was, you can try using sunglasses or a behind shot until you get comfortable. There is nothing worse than stumbling upon a new blog and going to find out more to only be faced with a piddly little one liner About Me Page...well there is something worse, not having one at all!   2. Contact Page The chances are someone, somewhere will want to contact you and you will be surprised what lands in your inbox once you put yourself out there on the world wide web with a blog. Many bloggers also use this page to include details for PR's/brands that may want to contact them and some bloggers put their stats on there too. A short, to the point and simple Contact Page works really well...whenever I have wanted to contact another blogger I am often very busy and have limited time so I don't want to hang around sifting through information looking for an email address, so concise and clear ...

  • Beach Cottage Coastal Blue Vintage Glasses on the Deck

Beach Cottage Coastal Blue Vintage Glasses on the Deck

G'day lovely Beach Cottage lovelies. So, yeah, so on a roll people, so on a roll.  I feel kinda home accessory wired right now.     I am always telling people, if anyone ever listens, that blogging is all about passion, not that sort of passion, but about passion that makes one tick. Things like this make me tick tick boom.     I love finding things that suit my budget and let me treat my home but look amazing too.   So without further adieu I introduce you, ladies of the beach, to the blue vintage glasses that I have been stroking for about a week or two now... These glasses are from a little boutique I sometimes happen upon, this boutique sells also pet accessories, carpet cleaner, bras and compost...it's quite unique though. And, thanks to my friend Marnie (she blogs over here, go take a look at her praying position, interesting), who just so happens to be one day having me over for a lil' Greek dinner, has let me in on the fact that we call Kmart....The KMart...with an accent ....as in 'I love The KMart'...just like her MIL does.  Oh yeah.  Love that. So I have had my eye on reproduction vintage glass blue wine glasses and being trying to find real true vintage blue glasses for like ever.   Oh yes I have spied them in Frenchy boutiques, I have lusted after them in stores that I shouldn't even enter and I have put them back pretty quickly in those shops with the hand-written price tags.  C'mon, you know the ones. And, though all of the above have tempted me, muchly, really, even with my wardrobe stashing skills I just thought that, actually, I'd rather be saving that casherooni for our next trip overseas.. Hello The KMart. Tick Tick Boom Vintage style blue wine glasses.   Do not come to my old place and think you might pick up one of these and smile with pleasure at their handblown quality, their weight, and be secretly jealous that my wine glasses cost more than your car...friend, that would not happen...these do not feel like that...indeed these in a funny way reminded me of my baby girl, she was a tiny little thing, with stick legs, the tinsssssssiest ankles and wrists you ever did see, she slept sideways in her cot wedged in between rolled up blankets and would only settle attached to Mr Beach Cottage or I or a (dirty) pj top of mine scrunched up under her nose...the first few times I picked her up to cuddle, being used to Honeymoon Baby who weighed in at 9lbs at birth and has never really stopped growing, I nearly threw her little bird-cum-rat down covered body over my shoulder. These glasses are like that...be careful or you might lose your wine down the front of your shirt. But oh baby, we are not talking picking up here, we are not talking quality, we are not talking house accessory snobbery. Beach Cottage ladies, we are talking aesthetics.     And this is what I need in my cottage. Blue vintage style glass, paired with coastal / nautical / beach stuff on my deck.     It's The KMart. Tune in tomorrow, tomorrow, I have more budget foofing for your home, or maybe it will be the dress that wraps me up in supermarket-chic and makes me feel like me again. Good Day to you my friends, wanna come hang out on my deck, talk house accessories, The KMart and drink some wine from blue glasses? Sarah
