G’day.
Well we didn’t get the fantastic storm that was forecast…it’s overcast, muggy and warm now…feels stormy…when I was down at the beach earlier after a workout it was pretty amazing…the colours were dark and pink and blue all at the same time and as I stood overlooking the beach with lg, we saw dolphins with our coffee!
A Beach Cottage deck progress update for you…
As you know I quite like beach decor and the coastal look…I think that a deck decorated with that look in mind is just lovely…
Here’s the deck frame before the slats were put on
and the steps going up to the front door to the deck
now boxed in and ready to be painted…to go with the beach decor theme… beach colour perhaps?
We went down a few different avenues on wood for the deck…in the end, because I wanted a painted deck for that beach decor look (can you guess what colour? ;-) ) so we plumped for the budget-friendly option on the materials…deciding that we wouldn’t want to be painting the more expensive deck timber anyway
I wanted the feel of picket fence/old cottage for the deck, but a touch more modern/coastal nautical so went for plain deck slats topped with chunky handrail which will be painted in my beach white, though I think the actual deck floor might be left to weather or painted the same grey as the back deck…which is kinda a pebble grey….
This is a small deck/veranda, I am hoping for Adirondacks out here and a little table for one’s drink….can’t wait to get it all styled…I think though when it is ready it will be not so uch about beach decor but more about time to be getting the Coastal Christmas decs out…
I am thinking hydrangeas (if it’s not too hot), a few big pots and the odd coastal /nautical beach decor thing…like an oar or similar…
We have a lot of painting to do….
Adios for now lovelies, I’ll be back soon
Cheers

Hello Sarah
Exciting stuff – I can see it all coming along.
Oh I hope to see the Adriondacks out the soon for you too. Maybe we will get a night time photo of little glistening fairy lights draped along the pretty railing.
looking good – (even a corner for a broomstick if needed).
have a great day
loulou, from hereiamloulou blog
x
ahhh yes a broomstick corner!
It looks wonderful Sarah. Nearly there, congratulations! :-)
PS. How do you feel about your front mesh door? Are you going to leave it, replace it or get rid of it all together when the new door comes? I ask because, I have a similar problem at mine, I am going to replace my front door but I don’t know what to do with the fly screen. I think houses look better when they don’t have one, (especially period homes, mine was built in 1931) but I like to open my door and let the sea breeze flow through the house without the flies (or worse) getting in. What are your thoughts?
I did blog about it Carli…I don’t want to keep the fly screen at all…but I have the same, this house was obviously built before air conditioning and planned for the breeze to go right through..it’s lovely…first of all we are going without screen to see how it goes…probs will end up getting one though…I am keeping my eye open for some vintage style ones…
xo
Oh I am sorry, you did blog about it. Did I mention I have pregnancy brain? x
haha well my brain is like that and I am not pregnant!

Oh, I love the idea of painting the rails and sides and letting the floor deck weather. Very beachy! ❈ Had the Ikea run today, sadly they were sold out of the holiday glasses this time. Might have to go back (wink).
I have a trip to Ikea (3 hours south of me) planned on Friday. I will not be happy if those glasses and bottle are sold out !!!
what a shame you’ll have to go back ;-)
Ooo la la ! Lovely ! I do love the knots showing in the wood. Wonder if you could do some kind of beachy (white or gray) wash so they would still show. I can just see it all decorated for Christmas with little white lights wrapped all around the rails !
How SWEET!
I see it all. Your vision is completely inspiring!
Good luck, & can’t wait to see the finale!
Cherie xx
Looking fabulous, I look forward to seeing the end. Mimi xx
Beautiful Sarah, you have such good taste and I too can see it styled up so nicely.
Our deck is concrete and is all uneven – must have had tiles on it before we purchased this little beachy style house of ours.
One day we will do a new deck, but in the meantime I can live vicariously through you! ;)
Now I was just thinking this morning if you have come up with any inspiring shades of beachy blue for me to paint the outside of the house??
I really want to get ours done over the summer break, but am still trying to decide on a colour to go with our Dune coloured roof.
Got any inspiration for me please??!!
well, I will be in the paint store (again) soon so I will have a look….xo
Thanks Sarah that would be great
It is such a hard decision…or is that just me being indecisive? Hubby is sick of me changing my mind, lol.
Loving the design, Sarah! Very coastal! It’s lookin’ good!!!! :)
xoxo laurie
love it…… so far so good. Am looking forward to drinks on the deck together….. even if we are 1000 km apart :)
yes I will come and sit on yours and look at your lovely beach! xx

Sarah have you checked out http://www.crimsafe.com.au/?
They provide that old fashion screen doors(I am assuming you want a door frame with just a plain screen mesh?)but they are the only manufactors that produce this kind of mesh on the doors that provide ultimate security so you get the best of both worlds.
If we ever move or re-build this is what we are thinking of installing because they look almost invisible…
I am loving the deck, can’t wait to see it all done up!
It’s really looking fantastic so far Sarah. I can’t wait to see it all finished and decorated. I know you’ll be happier than I.
It will great when it is finished, I left my veranda plain and just let it weather down to a grey, I love the look of natural grey timber.
Do you see me turning green ??? Yeah, I’m a little jealous of your gorgeous new deck, can’t wait to see it all done up!
How exciting, Sarah! I want one, I want one! :) If I had a deck like that, you couldn’t get me back in the house.
How exciting! It’s looking great! You’ll need to edit your greeting from “battered old deck” to “cute beach cottage deck”. Looking forward to seeing the next few instalments!
This is awesome! I can’t believe how quickly this is going up. We have to build for weather extremes here and everything seems to take so long.
yes, yes so loving the deck! can’t wait to see what you do and oh the coastal christmas decor will be so lovely! you just got that eye Sarah!
You are making great progress on your deck – it will be finished in no time!!!
