Hello lovely Beach Cottage friends!
This past year has seen a whole lot of capturing in my life on the beaches…I must say I’m not much happier than when I am walking along by the sea with a camera in my hand…….and ahhhh, life before the capturing of life via the iPhone, what quite was that again???
Here are some of my captures from over the last year from that little baby that lives in my pocket (and sometimes in that pocket takes a ride in the washing machine – I don’t recommend that part…it caused me quite a bit of heartache though has meant that I have up-graded to the iPhone5 which I am liking muchly)
I get lots of emails about taking photos, what I recommend, what apps I use (post coming up on that) and how I do it…my best advice is do it a lot (Mr BC likes that philosophy in life too) and capture capture capture…it’s the only way to get better (my early ones are dreadful when I look back…though funny cos I was pretty pleased with them at the time – at that stage compared to the phone camera I had previously it was like an awakening and I was so happy with those pics!)
I love trying to capture different stuff with my iPhone camera (tho all of these are of the beach)…for me having a camera in my hand is a bit of a creative outlet…like some people knit or play squash…
A new girl on Instagram asked me the other day for some tips on where to start with a new phone camera…I am far from an expert but here below are some of the things I look for to capture when out and about in my day…if you want to improve your photography maybe you can try them too?
1. colours…they are all over and I love getting them in my phone – I try to capture colours be they pretty, grey and dark, bright lights or the wonders of nature
2. Scenes – I try to capture things going on down my way…a game of rugby on the beach…
3. Light ….I am always on the lookout for sunflare, I dig it…when I first used my iPhone I loved ‘sunflower’ sunflare all over my pics, now I like it a bit softer…
different light (and dark) is everywhere..hunt it down
4. Sky …look up, there’s good stuff going on up there…I love it when the clouds change a pic…there’s much that changes when the sky changes…and you don’t have to be at the beach…
5. Life – look for life and what’s going on
I hope you enjoyed those!
Happy New Year lovelies
Sarah

I most certainly do enjoy your photos. You’ve been such an inspiration to me for improving the way I use my phone camera. Thank-you!
thanks and right back at ya girlfriend…one particular piece of advice springs to mind xo
Was planning on hitting the beach today, but the weather has put me off! Hopefully tomorrow I’ll get skies as blue as in your photos x
I don’t think you will wait long!
Your pics are breathtakingly gorgeous Sarah – thanks for sharing some tips – will go forth and snap away! Happy New Year to the BCrew!
thanks so much and happy new year to you Jos x
Sarah do you ever eyefi your photos to your phone and then instagram them? I do, I think I may be cheating, but don’t care! I think your’s are so pleasing as you stick to colour themes, ie not extremely contrasting to each other and most of them follow the rules of composition! I need to cull photos off my phone, it currently has about 3500 photos on it- bad I know!
no I don’t, I rarely use my big girl camera photos on Instagram… I can’t be bothered to do the moving over! Instagram is just a place for me to snap & go, that’s why I love it :-)
yes I know I have lots on mine too xo
What a beautiful set of pictures! I just got back in town from a trip up the coast to Carmel, Ca and am hoping some of my pictures turn out half as beautiful as yours.
thanks Lark, I love taking pics!
All so so pretty Sarah…love that last big one! Thanks for the tips…I am determined to get more out of my camera and phone this year so any photography tips VERY WELCOME!!?!! (smallish hint) I swear I even just glance in the direction of my camera manual and the yawns start in…not good!!! xx
I know what you mean…I avoided my camera manual for 2 years!!! however the moment I started to use it everything began to make sense…the way I did it was to break it right down into TINY segments…worked for me x
The big cloud pic? It’s a giant, baby chick swan-diving off that cliff! Love it!
I’m a big sky gazer, night or day. So, I love those pics.

Shots 2,3 and 4 really did it for me Sarah!
Happy 2013! I started the year with potty training woohoo!!! lol I seem to be a sucker for punishment…Then again I like getting over the unpleasant stuff first so I can enjoy the rest of the ride! lol
Can’t wait to see cottage#2 and it’s transformation! How exciting!
whoops that was me
Such lovely colors – and great tips!
