G'day girls, I've been for my morning walk here at the Beach Cottage, boy it's nice here at the moment, sparkly sea and sun…when I got back here I've been working on the makeover of the WC and making a beach mat for those long looming summer days from a patchwork of quilted fabrics – my first (and could possibly be my last) attempt at a quilt, though I have to say I am mucho proud of myself, have yet to master binding though…eeek.
Anyway, like my beachy pot rack?
As we've put down roots here at the Beach Cottage the very tiny kitchen has overflowed. So I've been thinking for ages that we needed to utilize the space higher up so that I can continue to feed my vintage-cooking-things habit. Thanks to Nigel Slater I am continuously on the hunt for that elusive vintage French milk pan. 'Cos the odds of finding one on the other side of the World are so high ;-) …perhaps Floss might be able to help me out there?
Along with a vintage open shelving unit being added to the Most Wanted List to solve the problem I decided I should go down the Pot Rack route.
And after finding a ridiculous amount of old vintage ladders complete with real, money-can't-buy rust, I thought I would, you know, do-it-yourself and whitewash one for a pot rack and try that to ease the kitchen space pain. So nice that it didn't go in landfill and even nicer that it's rustic and not one of those stainless steel trendy ones…oh and just look at how lovely that light fitting is ;-)
Getting it on the ceiling definitely took longer than painting it. I of course was supervising, Mr BC was in the loft (with the snakes) and Mr Teenage Beach Cottage was second in command.
I think I've told you before Mr BC's Frank Spencer tendencies, well this little scenario surely made me feel we were in our own live version – Mr BC in the roof with Mr Teenage BC below panicking as the ceiling shook.
Too too funny.
But the result was this and oh-so-much more space down below now. Amazing how much space pots and pans take up isn't it?
And rather than go on about it, I'll be, unusually for me, short and sweet and just say.
I love it.
catch ya later surf chicks…

That was funny! (the video) I really like how the pot rack turned out, especially painting it white. Can you just reach for the items or do you still need a step stool? It’s really brilliant!
That looks great! I like the idea of using all that space! The video. LOL I have a 15 year old, so I see that type of exchange regularly here!! LOL Thanks for sharing!
Cute Sarah!! I don’t see an island under that pot rack, do you have it high enough so you won’t hit your head on it? We’re both about 6′ tall here, so hitting our heads on things is a real problem!
Oh, I love this and I want to know how high your ceilings are? They look pretty tall. And, do you still get enough light through the ladder and items contained thereon?
Thanks so much for this cute, cute idea.
I like it.
I want it.
LOL, I could just imagine it!
I suggested something similar to my DH, I can’t repeat the reply!
love the wood ladder and the metal bins!
This is a great idea. Give me specifics about your dream-pan and I’ll look out for you!
Floss
I LOVE it Sarah! I’ve ALWAYS wanted a pot rack in my kitchen…someday..well…maybe. :)
Smiles,
Rachel
I love how you finished the pot rack Sarah, the lantern is a nice touch. Hugs, Margie.
The perfect solution, Sarah! I love it.
OMG the video was a great giggle- pretty much how I would handle the scenario too!!
By the way finished result looks fab….
Enjoy the sunshine – i can feel spring is near!!
x Justine
I like it too! Mine are on the potting bench and hanging from a little steel thing I bought at the consignment store. Nice to have them out of the way.

That’s a GREAT idea! Don’t ya just love those handy Misters? They are the greatest!
i found an old ladder a while ago, painted it white.. i was going to make a pot rack but thought it looked better in our kitchen leaning on the wall with different blue & white striped fabrics & wooden fish hanging. i made a pot rack from a single piece of thick timber. we even have the same hideous light fitting in our kitchen as you which i’m dying to get rid of.
your pot rack looks fantastic as usual! love all the things hanging on it.
isn’t it great when the weather warms up!!
Love the lantern snuggled in with the pots and pans.
Brilliant! I love when beauty meets functionality :)
I am totally upset about this. How could you. Only joking. I have wanted one of these for most of my life but neither had he house nor the husband to do it with. I think these put a real country feel into a kitchen. Lucky you! Cherrie PS Sis you know ladders also make great stands for displaying quilts? or newspapers? or…. ?
Looking good and practical too. Can’t beat it!
AMAZING!!! I’ve been wondering all week what you were going to do with the ladder in your Kitchen….I came up with a few ideas of my own but none as brilliant as this. I love it. Funny video – all your laughing made me laugh too.
Vicki
I’ve thought about doing this for a while too to cover up the same ugly light in our kitchen.
I’m just thinking though that our ceilings are so tall, it might be a pain to get the pots down again.
But maybe your post will the the proverbial kick up the …. to finally do it, ’cause it looks so great.
ooooh, this is fantastic. I love potracks, but I love this idea even more!
Ohhhhhhhh so beautiful! Love it!
What a cool idea, it looks great! I found one of those halogen lights at Ikea that pretty much fit into the space of my fluorescent light in the kitchen so there wasn’t much patching that had to be done to the ceiling. It was a while ago but next time you are out there check it out because it wasn’t expensive.
Funny video, think we have all had those adventures. You did well with the ladder idea, it came up well with your pretty collection of white beachy kitchen accessories.
fantastic – love it – your idea? Do you hit your heads? or are you all very short
You’ve outdone yourself again dear Sarah! Brilliant! xo Roberta
You never fail to impress me. Lovely idea.
hahahaha. Yes! we all can probably identify with that talking through the walls, or through the ceiling, or through the floors to our Mr. hero/fix-it/honey-do sweeties. And sometimes wincing and TRYING not to laugh or shudder at what’s going on or what we hear!! loved the video. thanks for the chuckle. LOVE THE LADDER MORPHED INTO POTRACK!!
Looks great. love your cottage. :-) :-)
What a cute idea! I love the lantern and the pitcher too! ~Ashley~ shanty2chic

Blessings from Tee at Dragonfly Cottage
whoa. what are the two vent things in the wall? do they stay open to the great outdoors all the time? i like them, i’m just surprised! the rack looks great. my ceiling isn’t high enough to hang things from. but your idea is fab, if i had the room. tell about the vents, pretty please…jkj p.s. WHAT snakes?
Wow, again, this is simple, beautiful, amazing looking. You will enjoy this so much. I just love it. I have a great pot rack and I am going to go home and change some of the things on it. I love how you have hung some unusual things on yours! I always, always love visiting your wonderful blog. Great post.

The ladder looks fantastic! The video had me giggling right along with you but Oooo, Betty, he did have a bit of trouble! LOL!

Perfect solution plus it looks gorgeous … Props to your helpers:) Job well done dear.
I love it too Sarah. I am wondering how I can talk my partner into getting on a ladder to put a ladder attached to the ceiling. What a brilliant idea! I did think of using a ladder for towels (that was my lightbulb flash) but that looks so good. I need every storage idea I can get! Have a good weekend. xx
I want one too…

that looks so good in your kitchen!!!
